Streaking Technique in a culture medium?

When an agar plate is inoculated, why is the loop sterilised after the initial inoculum is put on?
 
The purpose of streaking is to drag species from one streak pattern to the next on the agar medium to separate the species into isolated colonies. If the loop used to spread the species is not sterilized, then leftover species that may still be on the loop can be carrying along the pattern and lower the chances of getting isolated colonies.
