Stray cat in my garden, trying to help it?

There is a little stray cat that has been hanging around my back garden for a few days, Last night at 1am it was crying to get in my door but when I opend the door, it ran away. So I just left food out, and 5 minutes later the food was eaten. I have been leaving food and water out for it every morning and night, and it has been eating it so at least it isn't going hungary but I really wan't to help the poor little thing by at least giving it a warm house to sleep in. Any ideas on how I can befriend the cat and get into my house because the nights are getting very cold and it's skinny and doesn't have alot of fur:(.
