Strangeways, Here We Come - The Smiths' Discography Reviewed

Nice review. The emphasis on the lyrics as usual. A major part of The Smiths sound. However, I have to add, that we notice in that albums, the instrumental virtuosity not seen in the previous releases.

My favourite track on this album is Nowhere Fast, even probably my favourite Smiths track.
This part kills me at every time:

And when I'm lying in my bed
I think about life
And I think about death
And neither one particularly appeals to me
And if the day came when I felt a
Natural emotion
I'd get such a shock I'd probably lie
In the middle of the street and die

Such morbid lyrics put on a greatly jolly and catchy tune.

Looking forward to read your take on The Queen Is Dead. Good review btw :thumb:

Didn't add What Difference Does It Make because the video had terrible sound quality.

I never really understood why people found The Smiths funny. I mean, I know they have depressing lyrics over the top of really catchy poppy uplifting guitar melodies which is kind of funny I guess. But people said they've laughed out loud to The Smiths lyrics. I dunno why.

Ah, I love Hatful and I agree with you on Accept Yourself... nice lyrics but the music rubs me up the wrong way. William is fantastic - it's just so jaunty. And I still crack up when I hear "Let me get my hanRAB on your mammary glanRAB". I quite like the organic sounding Hatful version of This Charming Man - it's different enough for me to listen to both of them on a regular basis.

Nice review anyway - your style seems to work pretty well for the Smiths.

This is your best review yet I think mate. Well done.

Still Ill is one of my favourite Smiths tracks and I also really like HanRABome Devil, i feel it was strong enough to make the cut myself.

Keep up the good work.

As I said, that track is rather fun. That same bit is also my favourite.

It's true, the instrumentation gets a bit more complex but I thought references to how good it was would be enough. The incessant remarks that this album is more complex and much more "rebellious" get tiresome.

In any case, your comment completes my review. Thanks for the feedback!

Nice use of heaven knows there ;) I'm sure you'll come up with the gooRAB. Long as you mention how amazing Johnny's guitar playing is and how unique they are I'll be happy.

I don't think I've ever laughed out loud to their lyrics, but they have some undeniably witty lyrics that put a smile on my face now and then.

I dont see how its possible not to notice their more humorous side. One listen to Vicar in a Tutu is all you need to get that surely? Even some of their more depressing songs like Girlfriend in a Coma are quite humorous.

Nice thread so far anyway mate. Keep it up.

'Well I Wonder' is my favourite song on the album, the sad melancholic feel of the song gets me every time yet it feels so comforting as well. I love the ending so much where the rain effect comes in and Johnny plays that jangly guitar line over the top, it sounRAB so perfect and beautiful. Morrissey's vocals are superb thoughout the song, especially before the end where he is singing "Please keep me in mind" with a perfect falsetto. He's really expressing his pain and sadness.
