Stranger Than Fiction

This is probably one of the best films I've seen all year. Will Farrell really surprised me! Speaking of Jim Carrey there was a preview for his film Number 23 during the previews for Stranger Than Fiction... It's looks creepy! None of the quirkiness of Eternal Sunshine there... Straight thriller/horror film even.

Well I don't know. I guess these movies are all good, and we should be happy that we've seen all of them...

Do you think the director was trying to make a point with the long corridors and the sparseness of Karen Eiffel's house? I've been thinking about that.

I think Eternal Sunshine looked quirky and cute, plus it had Kate Winslet. Maybe that gave it the push necessary. These things are always so subjective. Hehe. :)

Oddly enough it's only SOME indie movies that people really love, there are plenty others that have fallen through the cracks. I'm not sure why.

Thank you! I feel EXACTLY the same way. Stranger than Fiction is similar to Eternal Sunshine in that both contain funny men doing serious movies. I'm not sure why people gave that a chance and not this though. It's true, both Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell did amazingly well but while Jim Carrey was lauded Will Ferell was rather ignored. Did you watch Punch-Drunk Love? That's another "funny man in serious fare" movie. Anyway, I don't think I'd compare Stranger than Fiction to Eternal Sunshine, it seems a bit silly to do that - both are just great movies that I enjoy, very much.

Yes, I think Penny was very underdeveloped but I think the Harold/Jules Hibbert (spelling?) were OK to me. Argh, great movie honestly.

That's actually a pretty good assessment! I like the comparison with Carrey. Even though I have liked Ferrell's films before this, I think that this will be a refreshing change for him, and it should also put him in a different light in terms of critics and the Hollywood arena.

Exactly. Now "indie" cred gets movies so far, including lesser movies that are really not that great once you see them. It's very disappointing because studio films can be just as meta, daring and charming as any "indie" out there.

I sincerely believe that Will Ferrell's participation sort of turned off some people. If it had been Edward Norton, Guy Pearce or Johnny Depp in the lead role, then I think we would've seen more acclaim for the movie.

People don't realize that Will Ferrell was absolutely perfect in this movie, and that the script holds its own with any movie out there with a surreal concept. I'm thinking especially of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind here, that was a great concept and it had a traditional "funny man" leading, yet people gave it a chance. Heck, people were really impressed with him and gave him lots of praise for his "serious" performance.

The special effects for Stranger than Fiction were really well done, just like in Eternal Sunshine. I will admit that Kate Winslet was more charming and attractive than Maggie Gyllenhaal, but Maggie still created a unique character than Harold would definitely fall for.

For weak points, I thought the scenes with Dustin Hoffman could've been tightened and Penny's character should've been fleshed out more. But those are minor points.

I'd reckon it's as good, if not better, than Juno and Little Miss Sunshine (tend to associate them even though I peronally preferred LSM). I don't know why the movie wasn't talked about more - why is it that only some 'indie' movies are picked up by the general population and others aren't? Or was it the premise of the movie that kind of made people stay away? I don't know. I think Lars and the Real Girl is another example of this too, should have been picked up at the awards circuit but wasn't.

Weak spots. What do you think are the movie's weak spots? And I didn't watch Memento. Am assuming it's good!

This looks very interesting. Sometimes Will Ferrell can be a little "much" for me. However, this role seems more mellow and quirky so I am really looking forward to it.

I'll compare this entire situation to Jim Carrey. I'm not a fan of his. He has his moments but he's too over the top for me. However, Eternal Sunshine was a good quirky movie that he did a nice job with. I kind of see that as similar to how Will Ferrell will be with "Stranger Than Fiction." I'm excited :)

No problem. I searched and didn't see one recently, so I thought I would start a new one. Anyways, have you gone into the movie's website at all? It's pretty cool...Emma Thompson actually narrates your visit, so depending on what you click on or don't she makes different comments. It's pretty funny.

Oh gosh - I thought we did have a thread for this film, but our Search Feature isn't working right now...

Oh well - we can merge the threads later if the need arises. In the meantime, thanks for the thread! :)

Didn't see a thread for this movie and I just saw the trailer recently. It looks like it's going to be a great comedy, and it's also a somewhat different role for Ferrell...a little more serious.

Thoughts?
