It truly is!

It's also amazing how the movie is just brushed over. How is this movie not great? This was just as good a movie as Juno (for those who liked it) and Memento, at the least. I know the movie has some weak points, but the whole is a beautiful, intelligent film and it's sad that it's not talked about and praised more.

I liked the movie when I started watching it ( for Emma T) but along the way it became too dramatic and not very likeable. JMHO :)

I agree about the skills comedic actors have. It not only gives them an edge, sometimes they can make emotional scenes even more touching than dramatic actors can.

When Harold is confessing he doesn't want to die, those scenes could have been so cliched if played a traditional dramatic actor... But with Will, he's so true and he's being in character, not going for the scenery chewing at all. He brings such sympathy to the role just by downplaying the tragedy and then have it slowly take over him as he understands he has no choice in his own story.

It's true. You know, I watched it again and the movie just gets better and better with repeated viewings, because you start picking up the small details - like the focus on the boy, the bus driver, Harold, the green apple - it's there right from the beginning. And I like the flow of the shots (er, not a film student so I don't know how to put this) - like in one scene someone puts something down, and in the next someone else picks something up. You know? and the visual effects, especially in the beginning - can't tire of them, ever.

Anyway. Great movie. I like how it's so crazy, all these layers intertwining - the character, the author, everything. It's quite existantial, isn't it?

I agree with all of this.

The movie unfolded in such an organic way, the characters all invested in their own lives, but slowly they start taking notice of the world, of the people they meet, etc. Everything starts making sense when it stops making sense. Or whatever.

Anyway, it's a smart movie, and it's good.

I love Will Ferrell's funny movies. I've already seen "Step Brothers" twice, but I have a teenage boys sense of humor.

That being said, I LOVED this film. I don't understand pigeon holing an actor. I find a lot of comedic actors do phenomenal dramatic work. Comedy takes a timing "straight" actors just don't have and I think this gives them a unique edge for just about everything.

They hated it? Any reason why? That's sad, it was a great movie. I loved it - it was smart (very smart - did that put the people you know off, because it's very dense?), it was funny, and Will Ferrell didn't annoy me. It's kind of like Jim Carrey and Eternal Sunshine, these comedy actors doing something serious and pulling it off perfectly. Plus, there were great co-stars as well: Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine and Maggie Gyllenhaal in this one. And yeah, Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson were fabulous as well  if you still haven't seen it, please do. It's well-worth it. Plus, any movie that has a Spoon-heavy soundtrack? Gets an extra star just for that :)

I love this movie. It is definitely one of my favorites.

I recently made my sister and brother-in-law watch it. They both loved it as well.

Which is surprising because my brother-in-law basically only watches The Blue Collar Comedy Tour and South Park.

It's totally an unfair burden for "funny" actors to carry around their persona with them all the time.

I think this was a perfect movie for Will Ferrell to expand his horizons because it was dramatic, but in a magical way.

Yeah, it's Will Ferrell isn't it? It's a shame really. On one hand actors like Will, Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler want to (and have) do more serious fare, but they're not taken seriously for it (people either are turned off by them in the movies, or their fans will be turned off by the subject matter). It's a hard one.

Surprisingly I didn't have a problem with Will though. But I go for plots more than actors/directors so maybe that's why...

I rented it last weekend and loved it. I'd heard so many good things about it from friends and decided to see it. I admit I was weary about it because of Will Ferrell, but he played the part well and the story line was great.

I don't blame your sister, I don't love Will Ferrell and I admit I put off watching the movie because I needed to get used to the idea of him in the role. But I finally watched it and was amazed that he was so good at being this guy. He was this guy and it made the movie even more touching.

When he's pleading for his life, then accepting his fate, it's so very organic. It's a wonderful thing to see.

You should totally give it a try!

It is a very ambitious script but the film does it justice beautifully! :sigh: The performances are gorgeous, the dialogue smart. I'd recommend it in heartbeat.

How were the extras?:D

It really is their loss.

And I agree. I really did forget it was Will. He was really, really amazing.

Going into the movie, my sister didn't want to be there. She had in her mind that she hated Will Ferrell and it was going to be like any other one of his movies. I think when people go to movies they should have an open mind. Sure, some actors have done some of the same type of roles, but they're actors and they can transform themselves to different characters.

But, besides Will, I thought everyone was great in it, too.

Precisely. I don't love Will Ferrell either - not a fan of low-brow humour stuff - but if you just watch the movie I don't see Will Ferrell, I see Harold Crick and that's what's so amazing. You forget who he is and just love the character. I think people who brushed off the movie just because of Will Ferrell really did themselves a injustice. Oh well  their loss.

i freakin loved this film! :) on my favs list now...

im going to buy the dvd...anyone know about the special features on it?

I saw this one a few weeks ago and I really enjoyed it. Will Ferrell definitely surprised and impressed me. Maggie Gyllenhal was fabulous. I thought it was good, quirky fun....really well done.

I loved this movie. I saw it with my sister, she hated it. But I really liked it.

That's part of the reason my sister hated it. She can't stand Will Ferrell. But, to me, this movie wasn't like anything Will had done before, or that I'd seen him do. I think he was a great choice for the role.
