Storage on bike (baskets, racks, etc)?

I ride my bike a bit and I need a place to put my bag or whatever I might choose to carry. I have a bike with gears and all those cords that go on the front. I was wondering what kind of storage thing I should buy. Would a basket work with the cords? I also don't really know what the racks on the back do and my mom said I would look like a loser with the basket on the front. Hah, so please help me or give me a good website with information. Thanks.
 
A basket on the front is kind of old fashion so listen to your Mom. Depending on what type you buy a rear rack can hold twenty to forty pounds. If I go to the grocery store I usually bungee cord a plastic milk carton to it to put things in. I also have a pair of pannier bags, but those aren't absolutely necessary unless you carry a lot of stuff.
