I just recently had the stomach flu and my doctor told me to not take my PPI until next week when my stomach had rested. I almost can't stand this rebound anymore. Should I take the PPI before he wants me to or should I be miserable all over again going through horrific reflux and acid?

HELP!

Hi Farblefurable:

I don't know how is having the flu related to not being able to take reflux medicine unless you were taking some type of cold/flu medication that interfered or did not mix well with the PPI.

I had a bad stomach bug last year and had to take antibiotics for ten days. At no point was I told to not take the PPI that I was still taking back then. I simply altered my diet to include more bland fooRAB and added probiotics, but I would have been totally miserable with diahrrea, stomach cramps and reflux to boot!

I can't imagine not being able to take your medication. I suggest you call the doctor's office and tell them your symptoms so you can get back on your PPI as soon as possible. Your doctor obviously does not suffer from acid reflux or he/she would have not suggested cutting out your medicine cold turkey.

Sorry you are feeling so badly.

I agree. I don't see any reason to not be able to take your PPI. I had the Norwalk Virus last year (don't think I will EVER forget that!) with vomiting and diarrhea and was taking my PPI the whole time. I couldn't imagine not being able to take it, feeling nauseous and then reflux on top of that??!:dizzy:
