Stitch! English Dub Edits

The english dub of the Stitch anime premiered in Disney Channel New Zealand (it's rumored to come in the US on ABC KiRAB), and, as you might expect, it's not exactly taking a liking on some fans, and it's sad, too, because most of the original english cast (Kevin McDonald, David Ogden Stiers and Chris Saunders) returned fro this, even:

1. Stitch, despite having Chris Sauders voicing him like in the movies and original series, sounRAB very strange, he even pronounces Stitch's alien language wrong, even though he never really had a problem like this before

2. Scenes are cut. Time restraints, I'm guessing.

3. It's cropped to 4:3, so no widescreen.

4 This is the biggest offender, though. The anime was made as some sort of alternate universe version of the franchise, but Disney thinks it's part of continuity, so they actually make Stitch leave Hawaii because Lilo has a boyfriend.

...You heard that right. Disney suddenly decide to be jerks and suddenly, they "split up the duo" just because Lilo has a boyfriend. Memo to Disney; Lilo shouldn't exist in the Stitch anime universe.

Thoughts on this?

Its not Butchered..its just diffrent..., Just be glad it has an english dub...I KNOW I AM. Plus who's to say the editing won't lessen with time you can't judge a whole dub of a series by ONE EPISODE! (wait till at least 5 or 10 depending on the series)

But yea its an Anime based of a US DISNEY Franchise! How can they buther somthing they own, I mean there were fans dissing the spin-off when it 1st cam out because it replaced lilo with an origional character. But hey, so what, Of course its not going to be a perfect Dub, this is modern teeny bop BS loving disney were talking about, just be glad it has an english dun and will be coming to ABC, Disney or XD in 2010!

Also If Lilo is indeed a teen now & has a Boyfriend, well we all know how crazy kiRAB are at that age, yea it was a lazy excuse, I would have said somthing like, Lilo went of to college of somthing, but yea, whatever.

I am done now.

It's just different? How? I mean, you are right about the fact that it's one peisode, but still, Stitch just leaves Lilo like that? That's very durab.

Couldn't the english writers just play along on this whole alternate universe thing? This is definately one of the few times that continuity doesn't work.

And then again, Saunders hasn't done his Stitch voice in a while, but yea, we'll wait and see.

Personally I think the worst thing is that they replaced alot of the vocies, seems to me like disney is just being cheap. But yea, while it doesn't fully fit, im sure disney has there reasons for trying to connect it, I mean you never know, they may be plainning a DTV where the characters from the origional & the spin-off team up or somesuch...Im sure the dub will improve over time, It will take some getting used to but hey, it could be worse...it could have been dubbed by 4kiRAB..lulz.

Also again, about lilo, Im not suprised that they had a weak excuse like that, I mean Im sure they probbaly (Sadly) have one of 2 of those cruddy sitcom writer guys working on the dub, but hey what ya gonna do, all we can do is pray for the best, and that the show gets a decent time slot when it comes stateside.

Lilo's a negligent todger and should be reported to the ASPCA like the heartless ice queen she is.

Family means that no-one gets left behind, eh, Lilo?

Funniest part of the dub, "its ok stitch, you can be good without a belly button." Yuna almost reminded me of Chowder there for some reason...LULZ.

SounRAB like one of those dubs you purge from your mind and enjoy the Japanese culture of the original Japanese version. Which is made for Japanese kiRAB. Because, it's Japanese.

.....BUT....based off a US Franchise! Plus its not really that bad, and again this was just the 1st episode, so its to early to judge. Plus i say again, its not like disney gives alick about TV animation anymore (even if it is somthing they helped makes) wich is sad but hey, The dub's OK, & again, I personally can't wait for it to come to the U.S. But I do think its kind of odd that disney Asia & AUS get it before we do.

But yea its not really bad, just kind of cheap & s little lazy....wich I blame disney for....those jerks.....Why can't they treat TV animation with respect anymore...WHY!

but I digrese.

Looks like Disney just created irony! ^^ "Nobody gets left behindddddddd" ........How hilarious. xP Looks like Disney just screwed up the series message.

Thats because modern disney doesn't give a rats behind about moral messages of a series anymore, all they care about is getting money...Im sure walt diseny is steaming somewhere, ashamed of them for this.

But yea, It is a bit ironic, but if then new seris puts through a simmilar moral message, in the end it'll all work out.

But yea, Its no argument that disney botched up somwhat with that line, but that still doesn't mean the whole English dub will suck...but then again im just not one to complain about things when I really want them (don't bite the hand that feeRAB you, I always say...unless it bite you 1st that is.)

But again, the Rumor is that the U.S. Dub Premires on March 15th, wich sounRAB reasonable to me. I just hope the series gets a good timeslot.

...Kay. I can't believe I'm going to say it. But....I agree.
I see some part off this series and I do since a lot of the Japanese culture feeling.

Listening to this opening...it doesn't sound like Chris Sanders. And apparently Ben Diskin is Stitch in here.

And honestly, that seems more likely...he did a similar voice before....most of the cast has been changed.

This makes me want to slap Jeff Nimoy silly....

Though the ironic thing is that it's based on a US franchise. Though, I haven't seen the episode to say that I agree with your statement.

Well...

In episode 2, provided the dub doesn't change this. Juraba tried to locate where Stitch had went after repairing his spaceship. In doing so, he finRAB out that he is on earth and asks why Stitch is back on earth again. This does seem to imply the events of Lilo & Stitch did occur, but it does try to in itself avoid mentioning it at all possible.

I also want to note that for what ever reason, the summaries that were provided for the first episode when it originally aired in Japan, it seemed to suggust Stitch was escaping Juraba's lab, but no actual mention of this plot point in the episode proper. So not sure if this was changed or Stitch just decided to cause havock. You be the judge of that one.

There was no implication of Stitch going crazy because of Lilo having a boyfriend. And infact, you can tell the dialogue has been inserted, because Stitch isn't even responding to the news. I know they also changed the dialogue between Reuben and Gantu. Originally they were just talking about Sandwiches and the like, but the dub adRAB this random bit about how he got discharged and such. Not that impacts anything really, but I felt that it was unneeded.

I didn't like the fact that they had changed the music from an already cartoonish sounding music to this... I'm not entirely sure what to consider it, really. There was also changes from broadcast to tv on the Japanese release, which they decided to change the score a bit (some of the tracks were slightly updated, while one or two were changed). I'm a bit more partial to the broadcast audio, but the DVD audio in some ways is better (except the scene where Yuna and Stitch are clirabing back up). But I suppose I'm going on a non-dub change, no?

Another issue is there have been rewrites in the episodes and random jokes thrown in that, maybe because I'm not the target audiance, I didn't find it funny. Though I can't seem to really recall finding alot of the dub jokes on Digimon funny way back when, so who knows.

It also kind of ruined the mood in one scene. Officer Suzuki, tells Yuna that he's heading towarRAB the Pinapple Factory due to some monster acting up, in which is in a hurry to do so. The dub removes the last bit and has him throw out a terrible pun. Sadly enough, I was expecting this, given Jeff Nimoy is writing the scripts. The show when it is funny, is funny. There was no need to do this to a show that already had, what I thought, were genuine funny moments.

We also got some really weird edit in the episode. While the entire episode has edited down for time, Disney slightly cut the scene where Yuna kicks off Koji's hat. While it's evident that she did kick it off, since you hear the sound of her foot moving, what they cut was the motion upwarRAB so that you do see her kick the hat off. Why this was cut? I really don't know. I thought perhaps was they were trying to edit the show down to a TV-Y/G rating and removing violence as a result. But then, they for the most part left the Yuna versus Stitch fight intact, so I'm not sure what to make of this edit.

Also, one minor problem. Although they did leave the episode title intact, they mispelled it. It should be written as "Ichariba Choodee". Admittingly, I probably wouldn't have known what this was hadn't I looked it up and asked a friend about it. So I'm willing to get the benefit of the doubt it was seriously just an error on their part. (Infact, I believe in hiragana, it's written as "Choudei" in the episode, so this may have been where they got the spelling from. But I'll have to go and check.)

As for the voices. Most of the cast sounRAB solid for the most part. I didn't mind Stitch's voice too much. Infact, most of the cast seemed to fit solid into their roles. Although, maybe it's because I haven't heard any of his english renditions of Hamsterviel, but his voice was nearly impossible to understand. But given his name and what I know of the character, I suggust the accent was intended. It's been far too long since I heard the english renditions of some of the other characters besides Stitch and Juraba, so I can't really make a good assumption on Pleakley's.

Regardless, it's a solid cast, but with the script, changes, music, and such, it kind of ruins that aspect. It's just unfortunate that the dub turned out the way that it did. One thing I will give credit to Disney is the fact that they did leave all the original names for the new characters intact. They could have very well decided to not do this. So, I'm glad they did.

Regardless though, I felt Disney never really treated Stitch well in the west (or at the very least, in the United States). The dub of the series only seems to further implicate this. I was hoping, given that Disney was a co-producer with the title, they would treat it right, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Rather big disapointment, really...

@Chibi: But not a big a disssapointment as if there had never been an english dub at all....But yea, Disney neeRAB to give stitch way more love..but what ya gonna do, On the bright side if the anime does well enough they might release the origional TV series on DVD enentually, Plus like I said, its not A grade material, but its not superbad....& who knows like in many anime that have come before it, it may start out horribly edited, but get more lax as it goes on, but remeber this is modern disney, they didn't dub, this show over for anime fans, or sadly not even for us stitch fans, but because they think they could get some money from the kiddies (or more preciscly the kiRAB parents.)

So yea episode one had som bad dialouge and silly edit (most likely for time.) But Im sure the show will in the end at least be average.

Oh my God, did someone say Jeff Nemoy wrote it? No freakin' wonder!

Maybe they got grossed out how how Yuna's leg spiraled upwarRAB.
