Still my 250cc 2 stroke Yamaha is coughing & splattering. I took your advice but no...

Try disconnecting the kill button, or testing it with an Ohm meter, sometimes they start shorting out, allowing the engine to still function, but poorly. If it is, replace the button right away.

...change.? I posted this question last week. My newly re-built 2 stroke 250cc was running great till I left it for 9 weeks. When I tried to start it again I had nothing but trouble, having to eventually squirt some petrol down the plug hole to get the thing started, but then the trouble began- coughing & splattering. I took all your advice & cleaned out the carby, changed the fuel, cleaned the air filter and still not much change. Although it does start first or second kick now & revs well till it warms up, then the coughing starts. A lot of back firing too. It has only done about 100 km's at the most since I replaced all bearings, rings, piston, re-bore and carby kit. Why has it done this all of a sudden? And do I now need to rip the engine apart again? It still has heaps of compression.
And yes I have changed the plug. Why would the tuning and needle settings need changing if it ran perfectly well before all this?

Stupid question.. but have you changed the plug? Make sure you are using a number 8 plug ie: NGK BR8EV etc. Whip the cover off engine and just check there is no moisture in there.. My 380 EXC had all the same issues as listed and it had water in the cover. If it has compression, then the head gasket is ok. Im thinking its more of a mixing issue tho. Take the carby out, take it and all your jets and needles to a shop and have a mechanic set the needle and clip to local atmospheric conditions, have him recommend the correect fuel ratio for the area you live in. I used to race in NT Australia, and depending on the day, our mechanic used to set premix at either 33:1 or 40:1 and our needle clip adjusted up or down a notch,

Oh, if you have an inline fuel filter - change it. The oil will have clogged the strainer. Dont even try to clean it out - either remove it and run without it till ur next at a bike shop or go get a new one today.
