Still going to the cinema?

I have to say that with bigger and better tv's than ever before, the advent of High Definition and surround sound systems, is there any need to go the cinema any more? Last time I went was to see Transformers, which I thought was a great fun film but... The picture quality just wasn't up to what I have at home. Are they not going to bring out hd for cinemas? Of course the screen is far bigger than my 37" telly, but the quality of the image is nowhere near as sharp as a good blu ray. And then there's the issue of various chavs who talk all the way through and rustle their sweet wrappers. It's just more fun sat at home to be honest, especially now that there's only a few months between cinema release and dvd/blu ray release. Also, it costs anywhere between

LOL Cinemas are HD and have always been to my knowledge, at least the one I work in has.....

Course I will still go to the cinema....only cos it's free else I would just resort to torrents and cinema for the occasional big release.....

No...but that's more lack of opportunity than any conscious avoidance.

I think '24 Hour Party People' was the last film I saw at the cinema.

Having said that, I suspect there will always be occasions when I will want to see a film in a public context....no matter how good 'home cinema' kit becomes.

I would go during the day but not of an evening, my cinema is attached to a shopping mall.
So I would have to cross a deserted mall to get a bus and that would be dodgy.

Might get mugged

Plus as I get older its just a whole lot less hassle to watch at home than plan a trip out.

When I watch at home no one uses a phone throws popcorn or makes other distracting noises appart from me and Im allowed.

I quite like going to the cinema as I guess an experience in itself... the difference when im at home watching a movie is that I know im at home and at any time the phone might ring or someone knock on the front door and I can see around me the room im in and it is somewhat distracting, I tend to be a fidgety person that is easily distracted but I have felt in the past when watching movies at home that I would find it easier to concentrate on it had I seen it at a cinema, since when your at a cinema your whole concentration (at least should be) on the movie and just on the movie, nothing else. Your not knowingly at home and wondering whats in the freezer to make for dinner after the credits roll etc lol I think thats the difference for me. Also call me sad but there's the whole thing of being in the cinema and having the smells of popcorn and everything... plus the screen is much larger than any TV we have at our home and larger than most TVs... there is also a social aspect of it too, like if you go to see a good comedy and your at a screening with frienRAB and other people seeing the same movie, when a really good joke is said and most of the audience laugh, you wouldn't get that at home unless you invited lots of people round lol I like knowing ive seen a movie only a week or two after its been released in my country and also the cinema I go to is handy as its only about 12-15 miles away and there's loaRAB of parking (its in a fairly large retail park) and parking is free, plus I can book my cinema ticket(s) online so I know I'll be able to get in to the screening before I leave, so its all very convenient for me... I also wouldn't be too keen to go during the evening at night though, I tend to go during afternoons...

Also I've always enjoyed going to the cinema to see the 'forthcoming releases' trailers (ie of films coming soon to the cinema), I always look forward to seeing the preview clips of what will be released soon, before watching the movie itself. Then there's the free postcarRAB and magazines some cinemas offer, so I think it is a bit of an experience that you can't really fully recreate at home and I still enjoy going to the cinema. Others might not agree but we're all allowed to have our own opinions, these are just mine :)

I've not been to the cinema now in over 7 months which is an all-time record by all accounts. I just got sick of the crowRAB that frequented my local multiplex, not to mention the staff ( spoken at great length before about the last three films there having the incorrect aspect ratio forcing someone, namely me, to get someone to correct it! )

However, I cancelled my subscription to LoveFiLM the other day, so I might try braving a cinema or two over the next few months - don't want to get too behind on the ol' movies now!

I have got an Unlimited card for Cineworld cinema and go to the cinema on average about once or twice a week. It works out a lot cheaper than renting DVD and I get to watch films I never would have normally chosen to see. I think its the best way of watching blockbusters such as Transformers,Spiderman 3 etc on a big screen even compared to a 37" TV.Also I love watching the trailers for the forthcoming films!

you love the trailers at a cineworld?? the one i go to (nottingham) only seems to show trailers for films that are opening within the next couple of weeks (by that time i have probably seen them online and even on tv). so, if i read about cool forthcoming trailers such as iron man/ the dark knight, i know i wont be seeing them on the big screen until next March/ April at the earliest.

Also, whatever the main film is I can almost guarantee there will be a trailer for a really bad/ derivative horror movie before it (i've lost count at the amount of times i have seen trailers for poor mans 'sixth sense' rip off's or the Resident Evil series there)

I haven't been for about 2 months, which is a record for me, Usually I'm there about twice a week.

Reasons for not going - well the quality of releases has been very poor this summer, but I would still go and see rubbish. I've just got fed up with technical problems (wrong aspect ratio, sound issues). Unruly kiRAB. Also pedantic staff.

I miss not seeing the films up large, I love the movies.

But I don't miss the whole Cinema Experience, which has become dire lately.

I guess having Sky Movies and the fact that DVD's are usually out very quickly means there is less reason to go to the cinema. At the moment I have loaRAB of Box Series of great TV to get through (The Wire, Six Feet Under, Homicide, Soprano's etc etc) I would rather spend time on stuff like this than seeing Knocked Up.

I am actually watching The New World at this moment, which I recorded off Sky Movies. When it came out 2 yrs ago there were no cinema's in my area that showed it!

Twenty years ago I would probably go to the cinema twice every three weeks.

Now I rarely go (maybe three times in the last year).

You read the synopsis or review of a film and so few appeal to me.

Yeah Robjphat I do like seeing the trailers in cineworld but I also watch them on my laptop although I still love seeing them on the big screen. Its also good to see trailers in the cinema for films that you havnt heard of which is always a nice suprise!
It does annoy me when you have to sit through the same boring adverts when you go to watch a film especially when you go to the cinema as much as I do. I have never understood how you pay to see a film but still have to sit through adverts!
Also it works out cheaper for me to keep my Unlimited card at

I do sometimes, usually only a couple of times a year though. I last went about a month ago to see Hairspray and I'm going tomorrow to see Stardust.

Yeah I go during the day quite a bit. Sometimes me and my mates just have a day when we go and watch 2 or 3 films in a day to catch up if we havnt been a while!
On sunday day I went to the cinema and watched 3:10 to Yuma and Shoot Em Up. In both screening there wasnt more than about 5 or 6 people apart from me!

Lonliness of sittin alone perhaps ? lol Not all audiences are bad you know. For me thats part of the ' experience '. Enjoying it with an audience. Its a night out.

I love going and have an unlimited card. I also enjoy the trailers but the adverts drive me mad. Especially the Orange one just before the film starts which features a famous actor or actress. The latest one is with Val Kilmer. Already sick of it and wish they would change it. Does anyone know what that man says at the start when he rushes in? I can never make sense of what he is saying!

I don't mind the adverts but it's easy to avoid them...just add 15 or 20 minutes to the advertised start time and then go in.....

I usually catch them though if I double up and see 2 films in an afternoon.....

Me too. Movies are still made for cinema viewing (who would have thought it eh?) and I am happy to pay the going rate to get the experience that the director had in mind.
So many people prefer to watch the latest films at home - Knockoff Nigel seems to be everywhere........
