Steroids then the Surgeon

I have had rhinitis for years but since July i seem to have had it quite bad, every day. I was hoping it was just the summer months making things worse but now Octobers here, so is my bad nose, and headaches which are dull, pressured at the top of my skull and in my ears, the fatigue etc. The PND has been bad but only at times.As mentioned before ive used steroid sprays, anti histimines, rinses, steam and nothing will rid. Im just finishing my second dose of anti biotics and doctor says if these dont work hes going to try a steroid, but i dont know which type as ive had the sprays. Then if that fails he's going to send me to a surgeon to have a look round. Has anybody had 'another type' of steroid other than the beconase and flixonases of this world. Also can anyone tell e what the surgeon actually does to 'have a look around'.

He's probably referring to oral steroiRAB (prednisone) - pills that you take with food each day. Typically they'll prescribe something like a 10 day course of steroiRAB - you'll take the highest dosage the first 3-4 days and then the daily dosage will taper down over the rest of the course of medication.

As for the surgeon, the first step would typically be an endoscopic exam during which they'll use a rigid or flexible tube with a bright light to look into your sinuses (the exams typically only take 5 minutes and you're awake throughout).

Have you ever had a CT scan? That's something they often prescribe at this point as well.
 
Thank you GC as usual - know i havent had ct scan but id like one just for piece of mind. After 3 months of this im getting fed up with it! Are these steroiRAB any good GC? I suppose they are an anti inflamatry? Also i hope they are safe to take!
 
Prednisone is a very effective anti-inflammatory. It's safe as long as you take it for a short period of time (usually 7-10 days for sinus issues). Typically they start you on a higher dose (40 mg) and taper the daily dosage down over the course of treatment. You may feel a little wired the first few days but most of the other side effects are only a problem if you take it over a long period of time.
 
Yes you were spot on my doc prescribed me Prednisone. 6 tablets a day (5mg each) for 7 days. I am so anxious at taking this many tablets, its a battle between taking them or having to suffer my sinus pressure problems indefinately, or until it miraculasly goes away.
 
If it makes you feel any better, 30mg a day is not a very high dose of prednisone - lots of docs will prescribe 40mg or 50mg for the first 3 days of a course of prednisone (and then have you drop down 10 mg for the next 3 days).

You may feel a bit wired at that dosage but it's only for 7 days and you should notice an improvement within the first 48 hours.
