Stereo Hooked up to computer with HDMI?

Most HDMI outputs on computers are video only. Only a few recent video cards include audio. You didn't say what model the computer is, but I would be surprised if it has audio on the HDMI output.

But almost every receiver made in the past ten years includes optical (TOSlink) and/or coax digital input. That's what you should be using, it will provide much better sound than an analog connection, and discrete 5.1 channels.

I want to buy a stereo receiver and speaker to hook up to my computer. I do have Toslink connection out of my computer but no stereo receiver seams to support these. So I'd have to buy a more expensive 5.1 receiver and just hook up speakers to it. My computer has HDMI output but I just want to be sure that will work with a receiver which has HDMI input. Is that what its for? Also, I do have all the regular audio input output from my computer so that would work too. In short what is the best way to get stereo sound with regular speakers from a computer?
