Steering Column loose on 1991 Jeep Cherokee?

What can cause the steering column on a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo Automatic to become loose? The car steers fine but the steering wheel and column move freely up and down. I don't think it's the tilt because the tilt still works.

Is this something I would be able to fix if I'm somewhat "mechanical"?

What could I expect to pay to have a shop repair this?
