Passing through New Jersey in our sail boat we were assessed with a new Jersey "Use tax" of $19,000 on the sail boat. We had already left the state when we received a letter informing us that a "tax lien" had been placed on us for $19,000. The "lien" was not against our boat or any other property we owned, as we had no property in New Jersey. It was just a lien. This liens was placed on us July of 2000. Now that I am disabled and are wanting to buy a home through the Veterans Administration the VA will not approve the loan until the the "lien" is satisfied. Being a 100% disabled Veteran I have no money to pay this Lien off.
My question is: is there a statute of limitations on New Jersey for collecting this Tax lien? If so, how many years? What other options do I have to get the lien released short of paying the $19,000?
