Starting up a fish tank advice?

Alright I have this i think 20-25 gallon tank id say looking it. I have the filter,some rocks, and the light. Problem is i have no idea what im doing. Last time i tried the fish got stuck to the filter and died apparently the level of whatever chemical it was called was too high i read online?

So can anyone tell me exactly what i need to buy, what steps i need to take to set up the tank so i dont waste money on fish that die in a week and what fish are fairly easy to maintain without them being ugly. thank you everyone
 
You need stuff for Ph, nitrates, and things like that. You also need stuff for treatment if they get ick or some other sickness. I have a fish tank and it's about 40 gallons, and I have 3 fish. They are all healthy, although I started with 8, some died from getting ick and it was a plocastomus that gave it to them. I had to treat the tank, so be careful when you get fish and be sure you have treatment for just in case. Also you might want to get a fake plant for them to hide in. Hope it helps.

What type of water u would like to keep ? That would be my 1st question for you..
Now im assuming you're going to keep freshwater fishes.
Buy a pack of aquarium water test kit... Buy a better pack where the provide you with test tubes and color table to tell the level of ammonia, pH, KH etc
I have a pack which i forgot wat brand is it... Email me if u wan pictures.. It comes with test tubes and all the required things so don need the fuss of finding containers for testing..

1 more thing would be... Please let the whole fishtank regulate for about a week or 2 to make sure that the condtition of the water has already stabilize with the required optimum chemicals inside it...

Hi there!
There are so many things it's hard to mention them all.
But prob the MOST important thing when setting up your new tank is to dechlorinate the water, or the fish will die right off the bat.
You can also add products that help with "new tank syndrome" etc., before adding the fish.
Next, the temperature. When bringing home new fish always put the fish, bag and all, into the water for around 15 mins so the temperature will be the same before you introduce fish into the tank. If you have tropical fish, you'll need a heater to keep the water at their required temperature. Goldfish like colder water, so you might not need one for them.
Unless you have betas, the next thing you need to have is an air pump and setup to introduce air into the water. (Not sure of any other fish that don't need it). This is very important!!!
Next is the filter and proper media for it.
You didn't say if you want a tropical tank or marine tank, but tropical tanks are much easier to keep.
And make sure, if you decide to go with more than one breed, that they are compatible, or one will kill and/or eat the others.
Then as you go along, you can get other chemicals to treat the tank for ammonia, nitrates, cloudiness, etc, and illness, such as ich, fungus and bacterial diseases that may pop up.
 
I'd suggest getting 1 male and 2 or 3 female guppies to start off with. For these guys you will need a filter, heater, air pump and/or live plants and some fish food. Your tank sounds large enough to expand on this although guppies breed really easily so you may have some more fish soon. All you need to do is:
-Get the tank
-Put some gravel in the bottom
-Fill it half up with water
-Add rocks, plants, decorations, filter, air pump and heater (Don't turn on electrical equipment yet
-Fill the tank fully (about an inch or two from the top)
-Wait for about a week with all the electrical equipment running and then test the water PH and make sure the heater is at about 77-82 fahr(25-28 degrees celcius)
-If the PH is about 7 then you can go out and buy your first fish (two or three to start off with)
-Test for ammonia and nitrates regulary and carry out 10-20% water changes weekly.
-Add more fish slowly until you have a well stocked tank

Okay..tanks are fairly easy to start, and as soon as you do, you'll catch the hang of it soon enough.
For a 20ish gal tank, filter, rocks, light..hmm...
You'll need a heater & some plants....
As for the fish...if you don't mind a school of smaller (bright colored though =]) then i'd go with a couple groups of different kind of tetras, such as, about 10 neons...then you could have a couple guarmis also (they're pretty!). If you like the larger fish...well...you're kind of outta luck. Larger fish need at least a 30 gal tank...unless you just want 1 angel fish or somethin.
