Starting to modify a stock '89 Honda? Where to start?

Im getting a '89 Automatic (blah) honda when I get my license. Its only got maybe...33k on it. at max.

So where shall I start?
I know I will have saved about a grand. (not much, but I've yet to get much for bank to set aside).

Also, I don't know much about cars. So keep it in laymans terms :)

since its an 89 i wouldn't bother, even though it has low mileage, its still an old car, classic muscle cars are different, a 89 honda is just a square old car, in my opinion you will just make it tacky with any visual mods, if you really want to modify it, look for performance enhancing modifications, turbos, headers, exhaust, brakes etc. that's all what really matters.

Truthfully, it is a waste to spend the time to upgrade an automatic in my opinion, since your car is already slower than a stock manual transmission. But since it is your car, I would start with a good exhaust and headers, and good tune from a tuner or at least a chip. You are correct in that 1000 dollars is not a lot to work with.
