starting to cook from scratch?

I'm starting to cook from scratch, and i can get the appropriate herbs for the recipes, but i know for a fact i can't just throw it all in the bottom shelf of my fridge because it will rot unless i use it all at once, which is impossible, but being a 14 year old neither i or my parents have the money for a greenhouse for the vegies. i mean i can i can grow a small pot of one or two herbs, but i need more than 10 if im going to be cooking from now on. how do i keep my herbs fresh?
