starting on real life drawings?

i'm not the best artist and i've only ever copied other pictures but i've always been told that i should be doing real life instead, but i'm a bit unsure where to start. any beginers tips??

Start from the whole to parts. In other words, begin with the basic forms and shape before going into details. It may sound very obvious, but a lot of people make the mistake of beginning with the small details and the drawing ends up looking disproportioned
