im looking for a good harley to start off on
im 5'10 and 240lbs
my father in law is saying to get a touring bike but i like the look of the soft tail fatboy it also seems like a nice size for me i do plan on doing some touring. im inexperinced when it comes to motorcycles though so idk i already have a riders edge class im schedualed for

If your inexperienced, start on a honda. You don't want to screw up an expensive harley. Get a shadow 750. Or even smaller, the smaller bikes, if you drop them, big whoop. They're cheap to fix.

The fatboy will be fine for touring when your ready you will just need a nicer seat. However no matter which bike you get remember all the gear all the time. Also keep in mind that the Harley you want is a big V twin. That means its heavy has a lot of torque and will not be as easy to learn on as a lower cc bike.

As much as love harley and the way they ride, I'm gonna tell you the same thing I say to petulant punks that think a take-your-pick 600 crotch rocket is a good starter bike: NOT!!!! Yes the Fatboy is a nice bike, but a starter? no way. If you gotta start on a HD get a sporty 1200; that will easily support your 240 lb frame and still have power. The 883 is ordinarily a good starter, but not for a full size man. Some say its a ladies bike but they are FOS; its for a smaller frame light guy too. The FB will tour just fine, but hey, pace yourself. -Good job taking the R/E course.

Look, motorcycling IS NOT about going 175 mph and anybody that says it is,... is a F'ing FOOL.

You are about to be bombarded by harley bashers but believe you me: you are smart enough to make your own decisions and you do have the freedom to make that choice... its a damn good thing non harley people don't run this world...
