Im thinking of starting a small business from home and have thought about it for a year now. How much would I have to earn before tax and how do I get a VAT number? Some of the products will be bought from a wholesaler but they ask for a VAT no.??

The threshold is £70000 (turnover). Over that you have to be VAT registered. You can get VAT registration if you want uneder that figure. Just contact your local VAT office (HMRC). Some wholesalers require you to be a business rather than an individual (because they want high spenders preumably). Some just require a couple of bills/invoices with the company name on.

You need to register with HMRC as soon as you start to trade. Class 2 NIC will be payable monthly and tax is paid on all profits over £5475 a year. You do not register for VAT until your turnover exceeds £70,000 in any 12 mth period.
