starting a no contract line with sprint?

I have found that that is very true. However, in my department, we are able to put you on a 1 year contract versus the 2. Even though you are signing a contract, you are always eligible to get a free or discounted phone as if you have always been a Sprint customer and were out of contract. I have a Sprint phone that is not activated and I don't have a contract with Sprint. I went to a Sprint store to activate a line on this phone cause I did not want to buy a subsidized phone and be stuck for 2 years but the guy told me even though I am not buying the phone from them I still have to sign a 2 year contract. Is this the truth or was he just trying to get me to sign a contract.
