Started running again........now nose bleeds?

Hello all, I’m new here and looking for some advice with a strange problem I’ve developed……

I’ll give you a little back ground first before I delve into my problem. I’m Male, 31 and in decent physical shape, no medical conditions, don’t have high blood pressure and I’ve always been actively into sports of one kind or another since school. I don’t drink much and have a better diet than most. I workout about 3 to 4 times per week with weights for about 45 mins, and run (well more like jog) about the same amount of times (alternating week to week around my shifts) for about 30-40 mins. I've been running for about 6-7 years on and off with no problems. When I run it’s not at a full flat out speed, but when I’m finished my run I am exhausted. I probably push myself to about 80-85% of my limit.

Now, on a cold/average day (UK) when I’m running things are absolutely fine and I can probably push myself on for about 45mins (I love the rain!) any longer and I tend to get bored. I’m not a passionate runner, it’s simply to keep fit/stay healthy and I run around my village. I start with a brisk walk for 5 mins and then start with my run.

When I’ve finished a run on a warm day my head can be almost glowing it’s that hot, but my body temperature seems to be hotter than other peoples anyway? If we’re in the house and my girlfriend’s cold I can be perfectly fine, and if she’s just right then I can be boiling, and the same goes at work.

Now here’s my worrying part. On a hot or even warm/humid day after about 20 mins I can start to get nose bleeds? If it’s a hot day (rarity) I simply don’t even bother going because I know for a fact it’s going to happen, warm/humid days are hit and miss. They aren’t gushing nose bleeds it’s just the sort where you go to wipe your nose during a heavy workout and you think you’re wiping away sweat when……..oh, there’s a line of blood instead?

Now I don’t know if other people have had this kind of problem before, so yes it does happen? Or am I the only one?

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated here.

Thanks.

Most likely your nasal tissue is dried out and the combination of heat and exercise is causing your tissues to break and bleed a little.

Some things you can do besides sticking to exercising in cooler climates is to drink at least half your body weight per day in non-alcoholic, non-carbonated, and low or no caffeine fluids. This will rehydrate your tissues from the inside out.

Run a humidifier in your room at night (especially in winter). A thin coating of Vaseline just inside each of your nostrils morning and night. Never blow your nose hard. Do you use saline in your nose? While it helps most, some are sensitive and can actually get nose bleeds. Over the counter nasal sprays, decongestants and antihistamines can also contribute to the problem.

Try these things and see if they help.

Let us know how it goes!

Get your blood pressure checked too. There is a type of exercise induced high blood pressure. Notice if you're breath-holding (a kind of gulping-then-holding breathing runners get in the habit of) while running, that can increase BP as well.

Glad to hear it is going well for you!

Just to clarify . . . saline is basically salt water solution. They sell it already mixed at the chemist in a bottle where you squirt it up your nose, it can be a problem for others. It is for me.

Keep up the good work and glad to hear your blood pressure is okay!
