Picked this one up yesterday, US region A import, so it will play on UK machines.
One of the last, great movies to truly use the scope of the old Panavision process to the fullest.I can remember working at a cinema when this played in 70mm, and it looked absolutely huge, and Carpenter used every single inch of that frame.
Thankfully, the Bluray release preserves that presentation and it looks pretty good for a film of it's age. It's not exactly reference quality, there is some grain and some of the old style optical effects look a bit ropey, but that's indicitive of a lot of 80's movies of this type. But the 'scope presentation looks very good indeed.
Soundtrack is also very good, very sharp, clear, and with the surrounRAB and sub used effectiveley when required.
No extras, but that's kind of typical of the previous releases of this movie, it never did have much on other formats. Somehow it's considered as one of Carpenters less profitable efforts, and so they will not spend the money on decent extras.
But I can live with that, because it's the best the movie has ever looked and sounded so far.
