STAR WARS original trilogy discs released today - are the original versions in 16.9?

Thanks for those They're a brilliant source. From what I can see, most of it was minor tweaking and not really very intrusive.

Sorry but your aspect ratio trick is anything but rare.
Every widescreen tv has a ZOOM feature which is designed purely for non anamoprhic material like these dvd's.
You switch to ZOOM and the tv will display the movie in its correct 16:9 ratio ,but of course as its not anamorphic the picture is of lower quality ,which is why the loss of 16:9 enhancement is sorely missed by fans.
But this was how all widescreen material was released on VHS and Laserdisc before DVD bought in anamorphic presentations.
Not sure what point there is of a dvd player doing it rather than the tv.
In fact my Panasonic tv has multiple options including an option to lift the picture upwarRAB so that the entire 2.35:1 image remains but also allows the subs to be seen if necessary.
I have a Pioneer player and 2 recent Pioneer dvd recorders and neither seem to have the feature.
What is it called?
Back to the discs though,and I think its great to have the much prefered ending of ROTJ complete with Sebastian Shaw as Anakin aswell as the original music at the celebration.
I thought it was naff in 1983,but its far better than the crap Lucas replaced it with.
I'm sure most agree that this dvd release of the trilogy is quite possibly the most commercially cynical release ever of any film.
Are there any SW fans who are buying the films for any other reason than to get the BONUS disc?
This is basically Lucas giving the finger to every person who watched the films in between 1977 and 1983.
He thinks the tinkered versions are better and for those who want to see the actual versions of the movies that put Lucas where he is you have to buy the films twice and even then they are unrestored and non anamorphic.
The Lucas story that the original landmark versions do not exist in negative form anywhere is rubbish

Unless you are watching on a portable or a 4:3 set or have bad eyesight the difference between letterbox and anamorphic is immediately noticeable

I've got a medium size widescreen TV and 20/20 vision, and it doesn't bother me. Meh... S'all detail anyway. Essentially SW fans cried for ages to get (myself included) a directly mastered DVD release of the theatrical version. That's what we got (from the same master as the laserdiscs - not from the laserdiscs themselves as some people seem to think). If it wasn't the non-anamorphic output, it would be the 2.0 sound. If it wasn't the 2.0 sound it would be the colour grading. Honestly, most SW fans are at their most happy when complaining. It beats the hell out of my ratty old VHS copies.
Just to jump in here, anamorphic is the de facto standard for widescreen movies on DVD - it provides a higher vertical resolution that would otherwise be wasted.
Releasing these titles as non-anamorphic extras is a poor state of affairs and unless you must have this inferior release, then I suggest waiting to see what they do next year.

The reason for this SHODDY release is they didn't spend a bloody penny on it. It's just the versions from the 1993 laserdisc release. They in no way represent the ORIGINAL THEATRICAL versions of the trilogy as they look worse than they did back in 1977-80-83!
There is no doubt in my mind that the original theatrical versions WILL be restored to their former glory in the future, and included in a boxset. No matter what Lucas says they need to be preserved in this way. By all means, make further changes/enhancements to the special editions (including fixing, once and for all, the crappy lightsabers) but the originals should be archived in GOOD quality on DVD.
