You are? Congratulations! Is this your first?

 How nice of him to give Tolkien credit! Hee!
Just kidding - and I agree, I think one of the reasons I respect the LOTR films is because they're based on one of my all-time favorite epic journey stories. But then, I loved the crappy, early 80s version of the story for the same reason, so I suppose I'm biased (and a lot of people thought it was crappy so I'm using their term - I thought it was fun, if incomplete).

star wars i loved because of when hayden christensen was in it:in_love: but also, i liked the storyliine, and the love story...

LOTR was full of action and suspence and i loved it

but i would have to say star wars because of the theme/story, and the love

YOU GOTTA LOVE HAYDEN! lol

Thanks for the responses guys keep them coming. I wanna keep this discussion going so I am gonna add some pictures from both film series to the first post.

They are both good series.

I think they are DIFFERENT series and not just in terms of them being separate film series.

LOTRs is/was a series of novels first, long before SW creator George Lucas was even born, so LOTRs has a "classic" pedigree and I think it does add to the films because even Peter Jackson admits that without great source material, his movies wouldn't be that good. He says J.R.R. Tolkien is the real "screenwriter" and should get best screenplay of all time award ;)

Star Wars, on the other hand, has its rightful place in not only fictional storytelling -- It uses Joseph Cambell's Heros Journey as an in-your-face template; Lucas actually conferred with Cambell before he died when writing the first draft of SW -- But because it did change the way the movie industry viewed big budget, action pictures -- And just happened to be made at a time when the entire studio system, business wise, was changing and studios needed young, hip film makers to "connect" with young audiences and this is primarily why SW was so influential as far as a piece of cinematic history goes.

For those interested, if you don't have the Original Trilogy on DVD... See if you can rent/borrow the fourth disc that comes in the set as it is a 2 and 1/2 hour documentary on George Lucas called "Empire of Dreams" and chronices the origins of SW, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi as well as George Lucas' entire life. It is VERY interesting and explains in a lot of detail HOW exactly SW changed the movie industry because when people say that, they automatically assume just on a special effects and storytelling level... When in reality it literally changed how the movie business operates in a lot of respects and why a lot of the movies currently being releasesd aren't all that good, ironically.

To be honest, I like Star Wars better. Lord of the Rings is way too boring for me!

irune - you're English is fine, don't worry! :) And it's true - they're two very different types of stories stylistically, even if they are based on Arthurian legends.

To be honest I didn't like neither of them!

But because Orlando Bloom plays in LOTR I like that and because Keira Knightley plays in star wars 1 I like that too!

So I've got no idea! :cat:

Well, I prefer TLOTR from far.

Star Wars... just don't like it... I get bored everytime that I try to see any of the movies.

But TLOTR is just incredible. I first read the books there's a long long time, and then when I saw the movies... Woah! The story, the characters, the script... and the beauty of every single scene...
It's like magic all the time.

Ok, my English sucks, but I hope you'll be able to understand what I am trying to say!

Seems like a bunch of you are rather young so it's an interesting opinion that you're espousing (but perfectly valid).

I happen to agree 100% with LittleMilkJug because she's right (you are a she, right? Why am I blanking on that right now...) - there's no way the LOTR trilogy could possibly have the effect on cinema that the original Star Wars trilogy did, even though LOTR is extremely well made, considering.

Star Wars permanently changed the way movies were made, and the way the public perceived them. While LOTR was good, we know for sure at this point that the same can't be said.

Still - I also look at their overall impact on society and frankly I don't want to underestimate LOTR because it made people read, just like the Harry Potter series. That's not something to sneeze at (although, being a reader I've read the LOTR trilogy about a dozen times over the last 30 years *shows off*).

:)

Interesting thread idea - I usually think these are lame but your movie choices are fabulous.

Easy question. Star Wars. Best movies ever. I love the original trilogy and I own the boxset on DVD. Episodes 1 and 2 were both really great, and Episode 3 was the best. It was so well done. The acting and action were great and it answered all my questions and connected very well to Episode 4.

Honestly, and you probably don't hear this often, but I do not like the LOTR movies at all. I find them way too long and drawn out. Return of the King is the only one I slightly enjoyed, probably because I knew it was the last one  No seriously though, it was good, although it had a lot of slow boring parts. I would never waste my money on buying those movies though.

I definitely prefer LOTR. I can't really give a fair opinion on all the SW movies because in all honestly I have never managed to sit through more than 20 minutes of one. It's weird I almost feel guilty saying that. I wouldn't think twice about saying I didn't enjoy any other movie, but it seems people don't take the news well on this one. My whole college class stopped talking to me for a week because I said I didn't like it. My husband is the only other person I've met that feels the same way.

I love both, but im crazy about LOTR, the movies and the books are amazing. I cannot get tired of any of the stories, they are so heartfelt and i love the characters. :D
As with Star Wars, i love the original three and then the most recent movie that has come out. the first 2 episodes were IMO boring and i couldnt get into the story until Episode 3. I've never read any of the books, i dont know why but i just never wanted to.

So i think the better of the two is Lord of the Rings :)

John Williams is a genious

My oldest friend has never seen any SW film. She's not interested in seeing them either, even after I talk about it all the time and tried to get her to see it when we were kids. Oh well  She's not into sci-fi fantasy.
I also know someone (she's an ex-friend) who has never seen SW either.

It wouldn't be fair of me to choose since I love SW but never saw LOTR in it's entirity. I tried watching it once and couldn't get into it :( and Gollum (spelling?) freaks me out.

They are both good, they both have a little of the Arthurian legend in them. The original Star Wars trilogy is my personal favorite. The impact that A New Hope had on cinema is nothing like we have seen recently (and that includes LOTR). Saying that LOTR comes a very close second, its pure magic :)
Unfortuneatly I can't say the same for the recent Star Wars trilogy, ie episodes 1 through 3. They were OK, but not that good :look:
