Star wars knight of the old republic won't start on windows 7 ultimate?

every time i try to start it off of steam i get star wars: knight of the old republic has stopped working and I'm forced to quit out of it without seeing anything but a black screen. i have tried running it in compatibility modes and playing with the exe's properties but can't get it to work.....help por favor
 
some hardware/software is not yet compatible with windows 7, give the company time or whoever to find a patch. i have the same problem with a few other games, it does take the piss. stupid microsoft.
