star wars films - what order to watch

Hi. I know they are 'must see' movies so you will all laugh at me but I have never watched any Star Wars films so don't know much about them.
My seven year old has been going on at me for ages to let him watch them so I thought we could hire the dvd's and watch them in order... only problem is, in what order?
should we watch them in episode number order, or the order they were made in, to make the most sense of the whole story?
Cheers, Moose.

Yes. Episode IV should be the first one to see. If your seven year-old began with The Phantom Menace then you might not be asked for the rest!
A couple of years ago I started my six year-old son with the Star Wars films. It's the original trilogy he likes to re-watch.

Even though I am not a Star Wars fan, I will have to agree with the others here. Personally I don't think they should have made Ep 1 - 3 at all, as to me it spoiled the magic of the first (last 3) films.

As the others have said, it shoud be viewed 4,5,6,1,2,3.

Otherwise all the the suprises in Empire and Jedi... well.. aren't.

As a 6 movie saga, make sure it's the 2004 DVD versions or the OT, as they make the contunuity with the prequels work better.

They can be enjoyed 1,2,3,4,5,6 quite well as a second viewing - and not only because it gets the decidedly iffy Phantom Menace, and the even worse Clones out of the way nice and early.

As a die hard Star Wars fan, I must agree that you should watch the originals first. Then by all means watch the new ones, but be prepared to be disappointed!!

Episode order - If you want the story to make sense and to see how the Skywalker saga runs

Quality order - Would recommend the original trilogy first followed by the prequels

I don't think that you need to see them in order, as the story makes perfect sense. Remember, back in the day we only had the originals and we managed!! Plus you could say that the new ones ruin the continuity of the originals.

Don't agree at all. The story makes much less sense if viewed in Ep order. The big cliffhangers and story twists don't work at all if viewed that way.

Definitely watch the Original trilogy first (Ep IV-VI). If you watch it in episode order you inadvertently spoil one of the biggest twists in cinematic history (even though i find it hard to believe that there is a single person on the planet that hasn't heard that shocking revelation, lol).

No, the new ones aren't as good, but they are nowhere near as bad as the majority of the Star Wars fanboys have you believe. Excluding Jar Jar Binks of course, they are 100% right about that abomination.

I'm sure your son will love all of them though, but be warned that Episode III gets a bit violent towarRAB the end (it's the only one rated 12).

Oh come on! The Yoda Vs Christopher Lee fight was worth the price of admission alone! I hadn't laughed that much in a cinema for ages, lol.

Seriously though, if i were to rank the films:

1) Empire Strikes Back
2) Return of the Jedi
3) A New Hope
4) Revenge of the Sith
5) Attack of the Clones
6) The Phantom Menace

I rank them as follows:

1) Empire Strikes Back
2) A New Hope
3) Return Of The Jedi
4) Revenge Of The Sith
5) Attack Of The Clones
6) The Phantom Menace

Oohh... new game.

In order of how much I personally enjoy them:

1) Return Of The Jedi
2) Empire Strikes Back
3) A New Hope
4) The Phantom Menace
5) Revenge Of The Sith
6) Attack Of The Clones

and less controversially...

Objectively best to worst:

1) Empire Strikes Back
2) A New Hope
3) Return Of The Jedi
4) Revenge Of The Sith
5) The Phantom Menace
6) Attack Of The Clones

as most have said, watch the originals first, they have more going on, the pace is a lot faster and the characters are more interesting (my biggest criticism of the prequels is that most of the characters are rather po-faced and they lack any characters to rival Han Solo or Lando).

Once you have seen them and if you are interested in the back story then check out the prequels but, be warned, the pacing fo the first two really drags and the political sub plot wont appeal to the average younger viewer.
