Star Trek The Motion Picture blu ray

Finally released on blu ray for the first time (unless you count horrendously expensive movie box set from last year). Thought it was about time for a reappraisal...

I first saw this at a preview screening way back in '79. It was clear even then that the movie was not quite finished (it was being rush released for a Christmas opening), and in some sequences that is painfully obvious.

Back then I quite enjoyed it though...i thought it had a good sence of scale, great model work and it was indeed good to see the old crew back again. I even enjoyed the story, thought it was reasonably clever at the time.

Watching it now, I kind of feel the same. I know it's not held in high regard (probably just behind The Final Frontier in most people opinions), but it still appeals to me despite it's faults.

And those faults rest largely with the special effects...particularly those where the actors have to interact with green screens and unseen objects. They just don't convince, the actors just look ridiculous. The 'wormhole; sequence and the probe invading the bridge are the worst examples.

And like a lot of movies of that era, the effects sequences look pretty ropey on blu ray. Tons of grain and faded colours. Which is a shame because the rest of the movie looks very good. Decent sound though. Certainly looks and sounRAB better than I expected, that's for sure.

Unfortunately this is the original version, with no extras either.

I liked the restored version, because I thought this was a movie that was sorely in need of restoration, and like I said before largely because it simply was never properly finished. And it's not just the effects sequence upgrades, but the pacing was tightened up a little too. It was fairly ponderous in places.

Plus, as I recall the restored version was of superior picture quality to the original anyway...but I guess that version will be released eventually.

One thing that did strike me after watching it again - the constant costume changes! Blimey, it's like watching a Cher concert! They seem to change uniforms in every scene, and always horrible, bright pastel coloured garments, and even short sleeved in some cases. Thank god for the uniformity of the later movies.

In a way it feels like a different movie from the rest of the series, it was stand-alone and largely ignored by the other movies (no continuity in the storyline)...but for all it's awkwardness I guess it did at least get the crew back together and start the ball rolling, and we got some good movies out of them over the years.

First time blu ray release for this title.

One of the more unusual childrens movies from the 80's, and maybe not remembered with as much fondness as others because it deals with sadness and loss in a way that movies of that era rarely did.

It had some incredible creature design and huge sets, and they still hold up very well today...especially the Luck Dragon and the Rock Biter.

And it's a very good transfer, good pic, and because there are few optical effects there is not so much grain. Plus a DTS track as well.

Recommended...sorry, bit of a rush, got to go to work...

It's a shame that the full version of Star Trek The Motion Picture has only been shown on ITV many moons ago. I miss those bits that were cut and not put into the DVD versions. As this film was the return, after such a long time, it was like seeing old frienRAB again and is and always will hold the position of number one even with it's shakey story. Best story (for me) is of course number four.

ST:TMP has to be one of my all time favourite sci-fi's. Great story, great effects. Didn't care much for the sequels, though I thought ST:TWOK was pretty good.

They don't call it The Slow Motion Picture for nothing- most fans think it long enough without adding extra scenes that were rescued from the cutting room floor to pad out the US tv broadcast

It's an interminable bore and bears no resemblance to Star Trek bar using character names.

The story is a mish mash of 2 of TOS weaker episodes and because it was Star Wars that triggered the change from a proposed new tv series in 1978 to a movie , the producers decided that effects were the thing .

So we get endless shots up and down the Enterprise and in and out of the V'Ger cloud- pretty but dull

I watched it on Blu last week and I'd forgotten what a pile of unmitigated junk it was.

No wonder the cast hated it too.

Fortunately Wrath of Khan resurrected the series.

By not buying the boxset you are paying out more money and you are missing the exclusive bonus disc featuring The Captains Summit in which Shatner , Nimoy and some TNG cast members get together for a 70+ minute chat with Whoopi Goldberg.

Adding the restored effects to the film cannot change its status as shite

Watched WOK the other day to get over TMP

Great story? Are you serious?

The premise is a mixture of The Changeling and The Immunity Syndrome but without either of those episodes decent character interplay.

The entire plot could be written on the back of a matchbox

I havent seen the blu rays for the star trek movies but I was not that impressed with what SKY HD has shown. My upscalled insurrection DVD looked better than what they showed on sky. Are all the movies better than what they show on sky movies HD???

I only recorded 3 from Sky and they all looked like old and dusty prints as if they were the first HD versions created some years ago when HD began in the US.

The Blurays look like they were done more recently so dust / scratches and other imperfections have been removed - at least on the ones I tried . I've not put them all in the player yet

Other Paramount films on Sky HD were equally disappointing.
The Italian Job for example

As I mentioned above, the picture is excellent during normal scenes not involving optical effects, but there is a lot of grain and colour degradation during some of the effects sequences.

This is common with a lot of 70's/80's movies and old-style optical effects, where matte paintings, green screen and multiple passes of film layered over each other. It's very hard to clean up these types of effects for blu ray.

It can be done, but it takes an awful lot of time and a ton of money...and these things are usually dictated by how popular and financially successful the movie was. If the studio's don't expect a huge return on a restoration, they are simply not going to go the full distance.

But you can bet upcoming blu ray releases like LOTR, Star Wars etc will have the best restoration possible - no question they will sell by the shedload - but ST-TMP is not considered one of the best of the ST series, and it's fanbase is limited. Oh yes, I know there are a lot of trekkies out there, but it's not like 'every home should have one', unlike the aforementioned movies, is it?

I remember when I first got TMP on VHS how awful the opening shots of the Klingon vessels looked -but they certainly look much better on dvd - even when the shots are reused in WOK
