Star Trek II- The No Win Scenario

I have just been watching TWOK on Sky movies, and i was intrigued as to whether there are any references to the Kobiashimaru test in the new film. I ask this because in TWOK, Kirk suggests, whilst he is in the genesis cave that he cheated this test much earlier in his life, also, just thought i would say that how ever many times i watch TWOK i still think it is possibly the best space action movie ever made, and it holRAB up well for special effects considering it was made in 1982!
 
You see the simulation test being carried out in the new film, and there's a scene where he's up in the dock for cheating. I've not see WOK in ages and i'm sure it was Spock who questioned Jim on how he done it, yet Spocks in the scene where Kirks in dock, I guess we have to accept it as Nero went back in time and so history must have been changed. If that makes sense:o
 
It was Saavik - a Vulcan character that first appeared in WOK - that questioned Kirk on the point. Earlier in the film, Spock spoke of Kirk's solution, describing it as "unique" and clearly insinuating that he knew exactly what Kirk had done.

As for the new film, not only does it acknowledge and show Kirk taking the test, but it also states that the simulation we see is Kirk's third attempt on the test - a point that was also made in WOK.
 
Great film althought I alway thought it was a bit silly Saavik was called Mr Saavik when she's female. Apparently in the old days all ranks in the military were 'male' irrespective of the gender of the person but it still sounRAB silly when Saavik is referred to as a man. :rolleyes:
 
TWoK is by far my favourite ST movie - and watching II, III & IV as a back-to-back trilogy makes a great viewing!!!

the new movie clearly makes accurate references to what Kirk said in TWoK - right down to the point of it being his 3rd time sitting it. the new film then also goes the opposite way - as Kirk originally said he got a "commedation for original thinking" but got put up on trail for "cheating" in the new movie!!!

but non of all that matters of course - we have a whole new reboot to the Star Trek universe - techniqually the past 45 years of Trek law dont applie or matter anymore!

I certainly like how the new Trek film is a complete reboot - but takes a great nod to the mass/original fan base by having Mr. Nero change the past - so everything can be different - thus being a reboot!

On the subject of Saavik - i certainly prefered Robin Curtis's (III & IV) performance more then Kirsty Alley's (II)!!!

And Nicolas Meyer wanted to bring Saavik back for The
Undiscovered Country instead of the new character, Valaris. But Roddenbury protested, as he didnt like a hero from previous films to suddenly become a villian - and so did Kim Cattrall - whose ego would not allow her to be the 3rd actress to play one character!
i would have liked the original idea.
 
But all odd-numbered Star Trek films are sh!t. ;)

To be honest, I never understood that "rule." I always liked Star Trek 3 and its only downfall really is that it comes immediately after the best film in the series. Its not as good as 2, but its by no means rubbish.

To be fair, its only 1 and 5 that deserve that particular accolade.

Its probably more accurate to have said that all the even numbered films were excellent. At least until Nemesis came along and ruined ti all!
 
I watched Star Trek:The Motion Picture this afternoon for the first time in ages. I just don't understand why people don't like it - great cast, great special effects, smart story, the rather hot Ilia.

Still not seen the new film (no bugger I know wants to see it:mad:) but at the moment ST:TMP has to be my all time favourite ST movie.
 
My problem with The Motion Picture is that its SOOOOOOOOOOO slow, with far too much time spent on overly-long special effects sequences.

Now all that might have been forgivable if we'd have got a good payoff. But in the end, the story is just a rip-off of the old TOS episode "The Changeling," which was done much better.
 
Go on your own. Nothing sad about the cinema on your own.

The Motion Picture is an amazing film. The shots of the shuttlecraft flying over the Enterprise allows us to share what Kirk is experiencing as he sets eyes on the complete extent of the refit of his baby. The size and scale of what is effectively V'ger's transporter made my jaw drop and I still cannot get my head around it.
 
i go the movies all the time on my own! :cool:
if i want to see something, and no friend wants to go with me - i am left with 2 choices - either never see the movie on the big screen and wait months before i can rent/buy it on DVD to see it then or...... see it on the big screen now on my own.
i love the cinema and would gladly always go on my own rather then never seeing something!
the choice is yours!
 
Just watching TWOK on Sky and it got me thinking that as they have now re started the new films with the original cast whether they will think about featuring Khan in any of the new films, although i think they would possibly struggle to match the performance of the late Ricardo Montalban as the ultimate space villian!, any thoughts?

Anyhoo, Wrath of Khan is all right, but I and III are better.
 
Wrath of Khan is one of the few Trek films (JJ Abrams' new one included) that stanRAB as a great film in its own right. You don't need to be bogged down in Trek lore or characters, and you don't need to be so much of a fan that you excuse how crap it is! Yes Khan was a sequel from an original series episode but you didn't need to know it. It's still the best Star Trek film with the new one being 2nd IMO. Voyage Home and Undiscovered Country are the other good ones.
