Star Trek: Final Frontier (The Animated Series That Could Have Been.)

During my my usual wandering through cyberspace I stumbled on a site for a new animated Star Trek series that was pitched way back in 2006. The series was set in the 26th century and would have featured a new Enterprise with a new crew trying to maintain Starfleet's original ideals in the aftermath a a second Romulan war.

Sadly the series never got green lit, which is a shame because from what I can see it would have rocked. The site gives a great impression of what the series would have been like, featuring complete scripts and storyboards for the pilot episode as well as concept art and bios for all the main characters.

I know I'm starting to sound like I'm pitching the show myself, but I thought it would be fun to share and see what everybody else thought...

Star Trek: Final Frontier

I remember seeing something about this a while back. It would have been so awesome. I've been kind of hoping that the success of The Clone Wars series would spur Paramount/CBS into making a similar Star Trek series.

Seriously make it happen Paramount, CBS ;). I want my small screen Star Trek back.

It's just as well, in my opinion. "A new crew trying to maintain Starfleet's original ideals in the aftermath a a second Romulan war?" With all due respect (and I am NOT trying to start a flame war, nor do I want this thread to degenerate into a discussion about it), that's not what Star Trek is all about. From the sound of it, this show would seem to have focused more on playing around with Roddenberry's original vision (which means "flirting" between staying true to that or going in its own direction, and thus alienating the fans, old AND new). Heck, for all we know, this probably could have been strictly a comedy series that would have focused more on parodying the legacy, possibly even not knowing what it's talking about.

It's no wonder it never got off the ground. Roddenberry wouldn't have approved, and neither would the fans. Canon issues notwithstanding, at least Filmation's 1973 series (which is now available on DVD) stayed true to Roddenberry's vision (which I'm told almost didn't)...

You should really check out the site rather then judge it from my description alone. I'd suggest at least reading the script for the pilot episode, I found it very enjoyable. Plus the creators have all worked as producers on previous Star Trek series so they definitely know they're stuff, the pilot contains all kinds of continuity nods some of them pretty obscure.

I'd also like to point out that the Romulan War is very much a background element and isn't the main focus of the series, by the time of the pilot it's already been over for about 60 years. I also don't want to get into a big debate on Gene Roddenberry's vision. I will say that while the while the overall setting is somewhat DS9ish in tone, Captain Chase very much embodies the original idealistic values of discovery and exploration that characterised Roddenberry Trek.

And it is in no way a parody. While there is a fair bit of humour it's secondary to the underlying drama. I short you should really give this thing a shot, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I think I remember hearing about a proposed animated series several years ago. I like the general look of it, and the uniforms are pretty cool. But like Chiptooth said, the Enterprise design is not good at all. I'd say it's rather ugly. Well, it'd be fine if it was another ship, but to me it lacks too much of what makes an Enterprise, well, an Enterprise.

I think the new Enterprise is kinda ugly on purpose, the idea is that it's supposed to be one of the older ships in the fleet. An old grizzled warhorse rather then the slick and shiny state of the art flagship.
