Star Trek DVD (one disk edition)

Please excuse the following, as I'm completely dense when it comes to picture ratios.

I bought Star Trek on DVD the last week (the one disk edition). I watched it the other night, and rather than filling the whole screen, there were two black banRAB at the top and bottom.

Pretty much every DVD I watch on my HD-TV & PS3 doesn't have this, so why does such a modern film have this? It didn't really spoil the film, but I did detract from the effect of it.

Has anyone else had this problem with the other versions of the disk? Is there anything I can do to re-size the picture?

This is not a problem. The film was shot 2.4:1 which is wider than a widescreen tv and will, therefore, have black bars top and bottom (as should any film shot in this ratio).

Thanks for that. Any idea why they did it though? Are there any benefits to filming it in this ratio?

I watched The Badder-Meinhof Complex last night, which fillied the entire screen, and made me wish Star Trek had done the same.

Yes, the picture is bigger, therefore you can see more, and it looks more cinematic (imo). I'm surprised that you haven't come across more DVD's and films on Sky that are presented in this aspect ratio. It's generally down to the film makers preference as to whether the film is in 2:35:1 or 1:85:1 ratio, 1:85:1 is arguably more "intimate" whereas 2:35:1 is used on films that are grander in scope (like Star Trek, Transformers, etc...). Of course you could use the zoom function on your TV to get rid of the black bars, but then you are losing picture and decreasing the actual picture quality.

Lol :D
