Hi folks:

I rarely post on HoFo outside the Sprint/Nextel forums, but I thought people here might like to see some video of a custom-built N76 built internally at Nokia sometime prior to 2009. It's a working evaluation model of a Star Trek communicator.

Link below. Enjoy!

That is definitely something you don't see everyday. Judging by the font on that instruction paper, it seems this actually was made by nokia in relation to last year's movie. Nice find!

Thanks! I believe the limited internal run of these was built to evaluate the possibility of selling these - probably for a special edition tie-in to the 2009 Trek film. Of course, this didn't happen - they went with a re-badged 5800. As I'm as big a Trek geek as I am a phone enthusiast, this is nice to have in the collection. :)

That should really go to Motorola. Both the Ming and the Razr look much more like the communicator and tricorder respectively. What they could do though is have a bluetooth speakerphone done like a pin. Have capacitive touch so it activates the same way the com badge was supposed to work. Would be even more wicked if they play around with using bones to transfer sound.

Yeah ... I was definitely lucky to snag it. Just good timing.

Can't believe this made Engadget. I love those guys and have wanted to write for them for years.

Yep, an eBay win indeed! And thank you. I found it simply by searching for "Star Trek communicator phone" on a whim, so a weekly search of those terms might uncover one of the other 14 if the owners are ever interested in selling them.

Please PM me and let me know if that happens! I'd like to watch the auction and see if there are any differences between these models!

I will if I see it come up for auction. Could you PM me with the winning bid, so I have some idea of what I would have to spend? Thanks.

I have my N95-3 set up for when I slide the phone open it'll make the communicator sound. I get a kick when I see someones head pop up searching where the sound came from.

Ludawg, that's always a blast - love doing that too.

Dvin - it came with about five or so custom ringtones, including the usual fare of chirps and squawks, as well as some TNG-era stuff like Majel Barrett Roddenberry's voice saying "Priority One message from Starfleet coming in on secure channel," which is a good one for texting.
