Star Trek 2009

Its amazing how technology disimproves as you get older. I saw the trailer for the new Star Trek movie. Spock and Kirk seemed have a lot more in the line of cool gadgets and hi-tech instruments in their early days.

It's not that Trek technology has "disimproved" in the new movie. Although I don't doubt that Abrams has taken a few small liberties in order to reboot and freshen up the franchise, the increase in technological improvements in the past is mainly down to the improvements in and far lower costs of CGI which have enabled Abrams to show things which could never have been done 40 years ago.

The only reason the USS Enterprise transporter was invented by Gene Roddenberry for the original Star Trek in the 60s, was because the special effects costs of landing the ship on a different planet every episode was prohibitive.

And in Star Trek V, Spock had those rather groovy anti-gravity boots which enabled him to fly. The state of visual effects at that time allowed the boots to be used. In the original show in the 60s, just because the visual effects wern't there to show technology in use, that didn't mean the technology didn't exist.

I know it adRAB nothing to the conversation but. I LOVED Spocks anti-gravity boots :p I really wanted a pair when I first saw them.

I can't wait till the new movie, ever since I first heard about it and the cast I've been going on about it to my frienRAB, I think they'll be happy when it comes out just for me to shut up.

I was taking the michael in my original post.
In the new movie, the Enterprise crew are younger, and its a few years earlier than the timeframe set in the 60's TV series, yet, they have a lot better gadgetry at their disposal.
Just on of those continuity anomalies that irritate me. The new Star Wars Movies suffered the same anomalies.

The new Star Trek is a reboot (re-imagined) therefore it does not directly fit into the star trek franchise as a prequel so this is not an anomaly. Hence the new set, the new actors and the new Enterprise. It is

It sticks far more closely to the original format than other re-imagined series like say Battlestar Galactica.

I am glad that they decided to recreate certain things because the old ship and bridge wouold be unworkable today. I am glad that they took a fresh and new approach rather than trying to redress the original set and trying to make it look futuristic. I think when watching the new star trek people should enjoy it in its own right rather than getting too hung up on the differences between this and the original series. Continuity does not apply.

I think you need to think of it like Doctor Who.

No-one would say that New Who isn't a part of the Doctor Who universe, but the look and feel of it is far removed from the old series.

The new Trek film certainly fits into the universe better than the series Enterprise did!

Your right, although I did like enterprise. I had trouble integrating it into Trek lore! There were a good few things that just did not fit:

The ship

I agree there is something which is just not quite right about enterprise, I keep trying to get into it but I can't seem to, I've watch all the other series' and enjoyed them but this one I dont know why I dont so much.

Cant wait for the new star trek film.

The countdown comics are great so Im sure the film will be too.

I thought the ridges explanation was very clever. It explained why they were there then disappeared (and could re-appear later). It would also be quite embarassing to Klingons and not something they would want to discuss.

I believe the new movie is sort of consistent with all the previous Treks but

the villain travels back to before Kirk is born and changes history

I like the new Romulan look. I wonder what the women Romulans look like. I believe that there is a Romulan female communications officer. Will the Romulan women have skinheaRAB too??

I'm looking forward to the new film. My knowledge of classic Trek is fairly limited - I've seen just a few episodes from The Original Series and The Next Generation, but I suspect this may help me to enjoy the film more. I don't have as much of an emotional attachment as most fans and won't have the distraction of something to compare it to too much.

Just a few weeks until it's released in UK cinemas now. :)

Not only does the technology disimprove (geat word, btw!) between this new film and the way we saw Kirk and co in TOS, but the technology manages to improve from today's tech, then slump down to computers far less sophisticated than the one's we are using right now!

Godd god, how did Kirk's Enterprise end up using clunky tape drives, instead of swish Blu-Ray players?

Something the actual TNG films failed to do imo (apart from First Contact).

And speaking of TNG, what was one of the last things Q says to Picard in All Good Things?

"That is the exploration that awaits you—not mapping stars and studying nebulae, but charting the unknown possibilities of existence."

In other worRAB, have an open mind. Dont close yourself off. If you cant do that then you probably havent learned a thing in all your 20 years of being a fan. I aint saying you have to like everything Trek related, God knows I don't, but at least give it a go.

Having seen the film a couple of nights ago, I think it'll be a huge success. It's the perfect film for a mainstream audience who are either a) unfamiliar with Trek or b) put off by the 40-odd years of back story. It allows them to get "in on the ground" so to speak. At the same time, it contains enough references to Trek continuity, with various in-jokes and noRAB to the fans, that those who've loved the series for donkey's years won't feel pushed aside. And of course, Leonard Nimoy is there to connect things to "our" universe.
You should give it a try, though it can be a bit jarring at times, seeing younger, brasher versions of the characters we know and love (and in some cases seeing their interpersonal relationships tweaked in a MAJOR way).

I'm not a treky but I will add to this, I watched this movie and enjoyed it, take it as a new movie and the special effects are decent, the story was good, I don't know the characters so I don't have a comparison but I enjoyed it, don't tell my mates lol.

I loved this film.

Watched it last night and I thought it was fab!

I am not really a trekky, I did watch them sometimes when I was little and always had fond memories of the old shows when Shatner and the original spook were in it.

I really did love this film - and so happy hunk Kim out of home and away was in it!!!! :D
