Hi, i have got an OTT standie (Trotter) just turned 9 on Sunday, so only just left 8 yrs
she is 16h, very very stocky, solid looks more like an ID Dapple Grey, shes beautiful, big ears ha ha and a super soft temperement....i am just in the process of schooling her, she gets schooled every day and i try to vary exercises from one day to the next, the main thing im wanting to work on is building her top line and hind to prepare muscle build up for her cantering work, she cantered on the lunge today in a large circle and went round 3 times without stopping!! (yeay!) altho on the wrong leading leg, but i am happy with that at this stage and praised like hell!, i am doing poles, zig zag shape, cones to get her bending, supple and working her in running reins to get her to accept the bit and work long and low - anyone got any 're-training standardbred' tips or hinters that i could have?? any good exercises which will help me? oh i have also discovered that she is a natural jumper and loves jumping, since being schooled for teh last 2 weeks she has gone to trotting full speed to play with the horses in the paddock to preferring to choose a gallop gait over the 'fast trot' gait, i have hacked / trail rode her twice but she bolted with me at full speed gallop tho and has no brakes, no mouth, hence me just doing soleyl ground work, (re-mouthin her woth John O'Leary running reins remouthing system) as i dotn feel she is safe at the moment to take out, but she has potential, veyr honest and a sweetheart, just very powerful....p.s i have already retrained my other trotted mare, who is a bit further progressed and he canter is improving, however mainly she was taught through hacking/trailing & is small and isnt as near as powerful and forward as my new ott standie...!????? advice please...............???
