SPUTTERING PROBLEM 2001 JEEP CHEROKEE SPORT 4.0L?

PROBLEM WITH MY 2001 JEEP CHEROKEE SPORT 4.0L
2 WHEEL DRIVE ABOUT 72K MILES
AS I WAS LEAVING FOR WORK TONIGHT, I STARTED UP MY JEEP AND IT STARTED MAKING A SPUTTERING NOISE.
I DROVE DOWN THE STREET A LITTLE WAYS AND IT WAS BUCKING AND HESITATING. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND STARTED FLASHING. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND WAITED A FEW MINUTES.
I STARTED THE ENGINE AND IT DROVE FINE, THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS STILL ON. I GOT ON THE HIGHWAY AND GOT UP TO ABOUT 85 WITH NO PROBLEMS.

WHEN I GOT HOME I STAYED THERE FOR ABOUT 45 MINUTES, AND THEN I WENT OUT TO THE STORE, INITIALLY IT DROVE FINE, PUT ON THE WAY BACK IT STARTED AGAIN.
IT SPUTTERS AND HESITATES, WHEN I STEP ON THE GAS IT FALLS ON ITS FACE FOR A SECOND AND THEN IT TAKES OFF.
IT I FLOOR IT , IT WILL SPUTTER AND THEN ITS FINE?

ANY IDEAS?

ITS NOT THE PROBLEM WITH THE GAS VAPORIZING ON HOT DAYS, I KNOW WHEN THAT HAPPENS, THIS IS SOME THING ELSE.
I CHANGE THE OIL REGULARLY, LAST TIME I USED SYNTHETIC OIL AND A K&N OIL FILTER THAT WAS ABOUT 2500 MILES AGO.
I HAVE A K&N PERFORMANCE AIR FILTER AS WELL.
I CHANGED THE SPARK PLUGS ABOUT 500 MILES AGO, I USED E3 PLUGS.

I WAS THINKING IT COULD BE A BAD SENSOR.
WHICH SENSOR WOULD CAUSE IT TO SPUTTER, HESITATE AND SEEM LIKE IT IS ABOUT TO STALL?
 
I had similar problems.

It turned out to be the vacuum hose that leads to the O2 sensor on top of the valve cover gasket was dried out (the beginnings of dry rot).

When you have the engine running, squeeze the hose, if it takes a few seconds to expand, it might be bad.

The hose I'm talking about is about a 1/4 inch or so in diameter.
