I (as an undergrad psych student) have interval data, from an experiment performed, for a number of participants and have a mean for that data.
I also have a single value that I wish to compare the mean against for a significant difference.
e.g. Participants have to perform a task in which they estimate the probability of an event occurring by chance. I also have a value for the mathematical calculated probability of the event occurring by chance.
I am guessing I should use, in SPSS, a within subject t-test to compare the actual value of each participant with the mathematical calculated probability (which is obviously the same value for each participant). I have seen a similar thing reported in a paper (Brugger et al, 1990, “A sheep-goat effect in repetition avoidance”) however it uses a Wilcockson Z test, but I’m not sure why a non-parametric test would have been chosen.
The question is what statistical test do I use… and why?
