Spread of Gentility in Colonial America?

what was behind the spread of american gentility? (as in, when people began to wash themselves, keep clean clothes, etc. basically the emergence from peasantry)
*it's my college professor asking this question. so i don't have anything faulty in it that's on my behalf.
