i dont see why and how you can justify the idea that japanese bikes are some how disposable??
they offer very similar if not better performance . at a fraction of the cost
performance bikes ( you guys like the british ones right) posted in an issue where they brought the 1098 and the r1 to the "ring " and the yamaha did a 7:28 .8 and the ducati running a 7:34.2.
thats not like a second or even 3 . thats 6 secs off the duc time .
i have a ducati and i love it but i also have a yamaha and find it a nice machine also.
but for something in this case to perform better and to have people call them disposable is foolish and borderline crazy.
then the reliability issue. you CANNOT even compare the amount of problems you have with a ducati to a yamaha. all you hear ducati people saying is how many problems and how many times they had to go in and get shit fixed. i abuse the shit out of the yamaha and all it does is ask for more. off limiter every gear when driving hard . iam afraid to do that to the duke i have to say .....
plus like you already know . there is much more difference in individual bikes among italians . so that speaks for itself as far as how much of a margin for slop they have in their methods.
the japanese can at least make their bikes the same.
i love the duke and it has ball tearing power but i cant sit back and hear someone talk things that are far from the truth .
calling a more reliable ,usually faster machine disposable .
i dont get it .
but i dont get bringing your bike in the house either no matter how expensive or nice.
and yes i do like sushi.

Sounds like you came over to Ducati and brought the typical "They're to expensive so I'll bad mouth them" mentality with you. I ride the piss out of my 1098...track days all last summer, banging gears, bouncing off the rev limiter down back straights, power wheelies down front straights, Termi's roaring, rear tire grasping for traction as 152rwhp and 87ft lbs of torque vaporize rubber and test it's limits....all without a single hiccup, issue, problem, glitch or snag. Yeah, I'd put my bike and me up against your r1 and you any day......because it's not just about the numbers.

BTW, It's "Duck"....a "duke" is John Wayne or a bike made by KTM.

If you love it live it, otherwise it's just another motorcycle.

Buzz, in response to your wondering how I can somehow call Japanese bikes disposable. Because you don't "get bringing your bike into the house, no matter how expensive or nice", you probably won't get this, but here goes.

A Zippo lighter is disposable.
A Dupont, no.

The Zippo is far less expensive. It performs well in lighting your fine Cuban cigar It's easier to get serviced. You can get one anywhere.
Seems like everyone has one. You won't waste time looking at it because it's nothing special really. The Zippo reliably lights your cigar.

But it's not just about lighting the cigar.

first off
it has nothing to do with the price of the machine . thats actually the last thing i care about .
the reason i said the above is because stupid people were saying that japanese bikes were disposable and nothing could be farther from the truth . in quality or performance .
and yes ducati's dont have the best reliability . we all know that . you can say what you wish but we all know the japanes ones have less problems period. and the numbers that do matter are the lap times . i dont know about your riding level so i cannot comment . but your times dont matter nor do mine . but the pros that can REALLY use these things does. and the italian is not on top as often as you would like to think. as the time above is an example of one mags results. and what about the 999 series everyone knows those were behind the japanese counterpart. and a same year 600 japanese would hurt a same year 749. they have to cry and get the rules changed just for them every few years .
i got the desmo cause it was an amazing piece of machinery that has crazy power and great handling. at least moto gp bikes compete on the same cc level . not some oversized twin that needs mas tuning and 200extra cc to keep up witht the tune restricted japanese bikes.
thast why i got the desmo. i wanted something that was truly nice .
now next year i plan on the 2010 r1 .
see what that brings to the table .
i dont have an attitude , i just think some people here think they god because they have some italian and not a japanese bike . whoop d shit

and by the way . disposable means- designed to be disposed of after use . i dont believe that you throw away a zippo after you use it . i believe you have them for years. that would not be considered disposable . a condom, now thats disposable . dont want to hold on to that one for later .
and there is something you guys dont get if you bring your bike in your house . wtf
you guys serious.
what woman lets you guys bring your bike in the house . i give you props on that i guess though . i get caught and in trouble sneaking out of bed to rip the bong for a minute. the water noise blows your cover . lol
but to the point , sorry bout that .
if you buy a dupont at retail then you probably deserve to be punched in the face for being stupid. why waste more money on something that does the EXACT same thing with no more reliability. to be cool i guess 8========================D in their mouth

Just a quick note back: You're right, I wouldn't dispose of the Zippo after one use, but I wouldn't keep it forever and pass it down to my son, as I would the Dupont or the Ducati. I wasn't talking about first-time disposable items like paper plates, for another example.
You're all about the numbers, which was what I was trying to explain, it's NOT ENTIRELY about. People get a lot of enjoyment from the design/engineering/artistic virtues. I like riding such a fine machine as a Ducati. As stated many times, it's moto-art for many of us.The cost has nothing to do with the enjoyment of the Dupont or the Ducati. If you're happy with a great Japanese machine because of its numbers alone, that's fine. Happy riding.
