Sport Rider review of 1198

At the risk of appearing a Sport Rider defender, the
Sept. 2007 Sport Rider issue treated the 1098 well, giving it a slight nod over the MV F4R 312 in that comparo.
And their Aug. 2008 issue comparing the 1098R with the Honda (fitted with the Bazzaz performance system) was quite fair and complimentary to the 1098R.

Feb. 2009 issue of Motorcyclist has a good article on the 1198s and a fun comparison of the 1098R with the sedici.
Quite complimentary all the way around.

that aug issue of the 1098r and honda didnt fair to wel for the 1098r. they said it was a great bike and all but bagged on it b/c it was 40k compaired to a bike that was 11.5k and the times werent much different on the bikes.

and i beleive they said they liked the bazzazz TC better than the DTC.

IMO I don't view the 1198 as an upgrade over the 1098. Is 160hp not enough for most of us? Add the 1098 red frame nicer wheels, the 1098 has more street appeal. An upgrade would have an S in the model name.
So a journo's opinion is just that! Anyway he is probably not using that extra 10hp anyway.

Well, its true that 1198 has 10 horsepower more than 1098. But look at it this way, they are offering a new year model with only increase of $500. So with only $500 more, you are getting a new bike, more horsepower & torque and as well as some minor changes. Even if you have 1098 and upgrade to full Termignoni exhaust in order to increase 1098 horsepower to 8% for about $2500-$3000, its much expensive than spending only $500 for newer 1198 with same horsepower/torque. Make sense?

Overall Picture:

Duc 1098 with full termig exhaust: 160hp & spend MSRP + $2500-$3000 for exhaust 12hp (tot: 172hp)
Duc 1198 with standard exhaust: 170hp & spend MSRP only

I hope it helps!

I actually don't care what Sport Rider says about my bike, as they have knocked the 1098 from the begining (but I bought it anyway). I was just pointing out that I did not feel slighted as the magazine suggested, because the 1198 is now out there.

I go back an forth on sport rider. I think they do have some worthwhile articles, and I remember in the past when they were slanted toward Ducati (I think Kento even raced one). I just don't really agree with how they so "subjectively" judge bikes. UK mags are best in my opinion, but I think the best USA mag is Motorcyclist.

That is exactly what Ducati hopes for.

Of course we are just talking about written down advertised horse power figures for both bikes here Tthat really is not quite what one really gets, the written down numbers. They all vary...a normal 1098 usually shows around 146 plus or minus actual rear wheel horsepower. Their numbers are supposedly crank numbers and they surely do not cul a motor off the assembly line because it comes up short one or two horse power. One changing from a sweet running 1098 could get a 1198 with that actually might have the same horsepower one already had or even less......being mehanical every bike has its own soul.....they all do not run the same. I doubt whether any average rider could tell the difference of 10 hp unless on a track....so it really becomes just bragging rights. jmo

As I see it if you like the different color schemes or just got to have the traction control I do not se that much difference unless between the bikes unless one is just not happy with their 1098. To me the same is true of the 848.

I am waiting for a shoot out between a 1098 and a 1198. Same models and by a fair panel of judges and even more by ture Ducati riders that can actually know what difference there are. Japike riders just by what they ride would not tell the true story. Sooner or later some mag will do it.

Heck with the way the economy is I say everyone buy a new bike and hepl the world out and get back on its feet......I'm just waiting for Obama to give me an incentive check so I can go buy one with. Certainly a shortage of jobs out in the world and companies willing to give loans on toyies these days.

That logic won't work for me. That logic assumes that at the time of purchase, you could choose either. Or that a 1098 is still worth what you paid for it. But you couldn't. And it isn't. I already spent the money on the 1098. I have miles on it, and it's 2 model years old now. It's worth less than I paid for it. So getting an 1198 isn't as simple as paying an extra $500. All the money mssing from the value of the 1098 is also part of the cost.

Overall picture: (using round numbers)
If you paid $17,000 for your 1098 2 years ago and it's worth $13,000 now. And an 1198 will cost you $17,500, you have a $4500 difference to pay for the upgrade. And you're not getting the money back for the Termi's and other stuff you installed on your 1098. No dealer is going to take a 1098 and $500 in trade for a new 1198. AND even if the 1198 is already up on power, you're still going to want an exhaust on it for sound, so you're still going to lay out the $2500-$3000 on top of MSRP.

First of all....

I would totally use the "few extra ponies"

Your post is well put, and I totally agree!

I have known Texas Boy a long time and I can assure you, the mags may provide "food for thought" But overall, If he likes it, or wants it, he buys it. It's that plain and simple.

Knowing his habits in buying motorcycles he typically drops the extra cash on the newest machines because it's the latest and greatest.

I am not as fortunate as some of you guys who are able to afford new bikes all the time, but more power to you. If I could, I would have all new rides all the time!

We all know something better will be made in the next year to come, but that is part of the motorcyclist hobby. Knowing something better, faster lighter..etc... is going to come out is part of the fun and gives us all something to look forward to and post threads about.

As for me, the articles are all great to read, but because I personally know and work part time for a couple who own a Ducati dealer I am fortunate to extensively demo or take home the new bikes that Ducati comes out with. So I get to decide for myself how the bike feels.

For now, my 848 is a wonderful ride, and if they release the "888" or what ever they decide to upgrade it too I am sure It will be another great bike.

But mine is still just fine!

I agree with Aeon, and not just because she is hot. Okay, a little because she is hot. Honestly though, I have wanted a Ducati since i was 8yrs old. In feb. of 08, I finally bought mine. Ducatis all have their own personalities. So far I have ridden 2 1098's, 1 1098S, and a white 848. All of them were a little different, I don't mean just model differences either. The differences were much more than you feel on two mass produced jap bikes. I love my 1098. Everyday we get to know a little more about each other. She will always be only mine. I may at some point add the newest 1198S or whatever is newest and greatest from Ducati at the time a few years from now. Next bike for me is a new Sport 1000S in red to park beside Isabella. But these bikes are about more than just what is the flavor of the week. If all we wanted was the fastest or most powerfull, we would have chosen something more mainstream. I will be 90 and still riding Isabella.
