I am 29 yrs old and have spondylolisthesis. I seen my spine specialist today and he suggest surgery. He mentioned they have a new study out that is used in Euro but not yet appr. by FDA(usa). It sounRAB like it is less invasive and they don't have to take hip bone like the fusion surgery. Oh! my problems are with L5-S1. I did well with it up until 2001 when I was in a wreck and aggravated it. Now I have Back Pain, Leg Pain, Feet hurt, Hips hurt Etc. This surgery uses flexable roRAB. What do you think I should do?

as with any surgery, especially something as serious as back surgery, best advice is 2nd and possibly 3rd opinion before making up your mind. Everyone has different reasons for surgery, and you have be ready for it yourself as it can be life altering. Hopefully in a positive way.

My 15 year old son had surgery for spondylolisthesis 17 days ago. Everything looks perfect, but I will tell you that I interviewed SEVEN surgeons before I found the right one. Where do you live? Finding the right surgeon is essential. What level is your spondy?

Most people have pain after the fusion, so do more research about options. BMP is artificial bone, ADR is artificial disc replacement and fusion should be a last option. If you haven't tried exercises and shots, consider it. Your spine specialist will only do the surgery he was trained in, so get additional opinions before making a decision. Good luck.

Had posterior lurabar interbody fusion at L4/L5/S1 on Jan. 30,'01 with 6 pedicle screws, 2 Steffe plates, 4 Brantigan carbon fiber cages and my own hip graft for spondylolisthesis. Wear leg braces (afo's on both legs)for drop foot from nerve damage.

ScarS I am sorry to read about your nerve damage. As you know, this is a significant risk with spondy surgery. In addition to leg problems, the surgery can result in incontinence and sterility in males. This is why I searched high and wide for a surgeon for my son. The blessed doctor who did it uses a German made device that "clicks" the spine into place and then he does the fusion. He has used this device in over 100 patients in the last 2 years and has not had a serious incidence of nerve damage. He is in Houston.

Just wanted to thank everyone for there opinions. I have had ESI's done and physical therapy. Also use TENS machine with little help. The Spine Specialist I am seeing is suppose to be the best around according to all the physicians I have spoken to. My Aunt also has used him for surgery.Hope everyone is doing well and again thanks for the information and help.

Hello ladies and Genetlemen.

I am in the army and have L5-S1 slippage. Im in my third infantry based training school which can be demanding on the back, and want to interact with people who have had or considered various rehab methoRAB.

I find that doing excersises that move my spine like swimming or put pressure on it like flutter kicks cause pain. I regularly wear 50, and as much as 80 lbs or equipment for training. My flexibility decreased a ton since before the injury.

Texmom, you offered to share information about your son's experiences, but I did not find contact info for you. Please consider posting or emailing me.
