Well...I don't have a child with it, but I have it myself. I have a grade 2 spondylolisthesis at L5-S1. What is it that you are wanting to know? I'll try and answer any questions you might have, as best as I can.

Hi Monkey5!

I don't have a child, but some may consider me one (I just turned 20). I was told I had Spondy when I was 10 years old, and have been dealing with it for the last 10 years. I've had all sorts of treatments up to and including surgery - so I'll answer any questions you have as best as I can.

Let me know what you would like to know,

Becky

hi becky and Linda,
thanks for being here for me, there has been so much going on in my workd these days but tommorrow i am for real i promise i am going to relax and take time for me!
Okay about two weeks ago or so i took my son to the md and i finally got my son to speak up and tell him about this back pain hed been having that over time has gotten worse(not wanting to be whimp, you know teens, guys)Anyway he did exrays and said something about spina bifida and spondylo something and something about his bowels not emptying right. So today was the day he saw a specialist and now they want to do a bone scan to see something about it will show if it may be right as he gets older(hes going to be 16 next month.(lots of family history on both sides for back problem, shhh yeah it's me wondering around the boarRAB to, i was worried my son was just doing this for attention at first and i was really worried about an example i may have set, even thought they tell me i'm a strong mom and i do everything! but i am glad i pushed it to be checked out) Anyway see if it will grow together properly or something? Not really sure on that one, they say it's something like a crack in the spine? And i am guessing if it won't then that warrants possible surgery if Conservative measures don't work and depending on the bone scan.So i guess maybe just support and personal stories so i know what were heading for or not!:dizzy:
Take care, Melissa

Hey Monkey. I have this and I am a little older than your son, 27, but still young. My fracture goes all the way across the L5 pars, so because of this, that chunk of bone is hanging out on it's own in there and my L5 vertebrae is slipping forward.
For conservative treatments I have tried: Physical Therapy (2 different programs), chiropractic, 3 rounRAB of oral prednisone, and 2 epidural steroid injections.
All the tests I have had done include: an X-ray, MRI, CT scan, and a discogram.
They will most certainly do more thorough testing on your son to get a really good idea about what is going on, how severe his condition is, and if any discs are responsible for his pain. Then they will always try a more conservative treatment approach before doing surgery, unless it becomes an emergency situation (such as he looses control of his bladder or bowels, or if he looses all sensation in a leg..) If he can deal with the pain, he can put off surgery for awhile until his back becomes too unstable or the pain becomes too much to handle. It is a nasty operation.
My pain has been going on since last spring, and has progressively gotten worse over the course of the last year to the point that it is very severe, so I am having surgery in a month. The surgeon will use bone from that free floating chunk of bone, and roRAB and screws to fuse my L5 and S1 vertebrae together. I will have 2 incisions, one in my abdomen and one in my back. Going through the abs makes it easier to reach the disc that he is going to remove.
If you have any more questions, ask away!

megs, this is tthe hard thing hes a teen and although his pain has gotten worse over the last year he doesn't want to be considered a whimp and or a pill popper or become, but then again hes not sure if he can deal with the pain but yet knows there are alot risk and it's scary to have to possibly have a back surgery. The thing here is that i have a husband that doesnt believe in dr.s shrinks he calls them and it seems like everytime we turn around were jokingly or seriously basically called whimps because we take pain meRAB ect. Hell state something like got da^^ theres a pill for everything , everyones got bipolar ect. hes one of them people. I do think it's wrong because if someone has cancer ect. you would want to try every alternative treament to keep them alive ect. i'm sure you get what i'm saying he has said things like if i'm going to die then let me. So it's a very hard situation to know what to do. I will not let my son suffer, nor will i keep him from thinking he has to because of his dad, but i don't know what to think. I know we have to wait until the bone scan ect, to know for sure. I think hes lucky actually, i have been suffering for over a year now and dr.s don't know why except possibly a bulging disc and nerve pain, but his is something thats actually visible and can possibly be fixed with the right dr! I just wish my husband wasn't so i cannot even think of the word to describe him. Thanks and take care
