Hi my name is lexi, and basically im here for some information, i live in australia i have two children and am seeing a guy who is a year younger than me.
We have been dating on and off since november last year, and he has been through a lot........ He recently told me that he has been diagnosed with split personality dissorder and mild bipolar.........
I have looked up certain information on split personality dissorder and some of the symptoms appear to be signs of the disease......... The mood swings, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, anxiety, violence, and even him finding himself doing things he normally wouldn't, stealing mony from his boss and friends for example.
The only thing is i have not seen that there can be two or more people there, yeas he can be a jerk one minute and sweet caring and loving the next, but that does not seem to be anything out of the ordinary.........
My question is, is there anything i can to do to test if this is the truth or just another game that he is playing to try and get some attention........
Please if anybody can help me it would be greatly appreciated...
Lexi:confused:

I'd guess game, sorry.

Dissociative Identity Disorder (split or multiple personality) is extremely rare, if it exists at all, the psychiatric community does not agree on this condition. A diagnosis of DID can take years, it requires many doctors to rule out other diseases like brain tumor, medications or street drugs, sleep disorders, metabolic disease or simple malingering.

Perhaps his psychiatrist just suspects he has DID or maybe you mean Borderline Personality Disorder, which is much more common. Regardless of whether he has DID or not, please be aware that psychiatric illness of any kind should not be used as an excuse for abusive, criminal or immoral behavior.

hey unfortunately i agree with the above. i have been in mental health homes for a long period of times and have seen many different illness' but have never come across DID. i actually remember asking my CPN about it as i watched the film identity and they basically said that there is a dispute to whether it exists or not.
the symptoms you have described are generic to a few different personality disorder illness' and if he has been diagnosed with one then it sounds to me like he may be playing on this to act a certain way. ie stealing things etc

DID (or Dissociative Identity Disorder) DOES exist, though it is not, as alluded above, as common as depression, etc.

It sounds like he could have it, but it's hard to determine something like this online. In DID, some personalities may not even be aware of each other, and they may be extremely different from one another, which is why I say he might have it (as he habitually does things he wouldn't normally do but not all the time, it could even be in spurts and go awhile without switching personalities). BUT it's complicated if he also has bipolar, which can create two extreme sides of a personality within one person. SO there's no way of knowing on here, IMO, but it could be. Honestly, I don't think he's lying, but DID is so complicated and could have only two or many personalities that he would need to go to a therapist who specializes in it.

HTH!
