My daughter takes yasmin and 50 mgs. of spiro with very good results. That's equiv. to 75 mgs. total.

I'm pretty sure a derm can prescribe you antibiotics over the phone all they have to do is fax over the prescription to your pharmacy really.. so i hope you can get it! My parents are doctors and my dad also said that maybe i should go on antibiotics to flush out all the bacteria so the Spiro can work well.. but my mom whose also a doctor is really againist the use of antibiotics for me cause i was on them for such a long time before and thats not entirely good for body in the long run. Thankfully, I think the Spiro is working for me without antibiotics.. no new breakouts since I started last week. Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself either :P :)

I'm happy for all of you that are doing so well with Spiro. My derm told me that if there was spotting I needed to let her know that. I did experince spotting a few days ago but now its been two days. I think thats being on a bcp is important if having regular perioRAB is a concern for anyone. I too might also have to be on Yaz.

Hi Sidraz7-
I suggest you continue with your original routine for a while. I'm sure everyone is different but I experienced a terrible initial breakout from the spiro (my acne got much worse as soon as I started taking it). Continuing with your routine may help to fight any inclination your skin has to break out while getting used to the med. I have been using Benzaclin(a topical benzoyl-peroxide/clindamycin corabo that I had gotten a while back from a derm) to try and help me clear this initial breakout. I plan on continuing applying the topical until it runs out and I adjust to the spiro. GOOD LUCK and let me know how you progress. we are starting just about the same time. i hope it works for us both!

I am 3 weeks into the sprio and am so happy! My skin is healing! The old ones are there, but it's like they are not infected anymore. I have much less oil, my pores are shrinking. I have had no side effects, except I'm a little dryer. Not one single new cyst since I started taking it. I think I had a very minimal initial breakout - that was nothing compared to the cysts. This stuff is a miracle for women with cystic acne. Don't be afraid to take it, it works and is not damaging to your body like other harsh treatments.

My derm put me on minocycline today- one pill in the a.m. and one in the p.m. (same times I take the Spiro). I hope this helps to knock out the bacteria and ease this breakout. Hopefully it will help me clear as the spiro (hopefully) begins to work. There so much *hoping* involved in acne. :angel:i *hope* it works this time. I'm somewhat doubtful as minocycline is one of the first antibiotics I ever went on when I began getting acne, but maybe in corabo with the spiro it will do something this time........we'll see.......

things are bad again. pimples on cheeks and more back on forehead. the thing that is REALLY scaring me is that on top of all this i seem to be developing bad melasma on my upper lip, i had some traces of it last summer but now it is back and very noticeable. Literally over the last two weeks. I think it may have something to do with my taking the minocylcine (i have read that some people have a connection btwn mino and melasma). UGH. or maybe it's my BCPs (orthocyclen). I NEED HELP. i look worse than ever, have a graduation coming up, and have to meet my boyfrienRAB parents (all in the next three weeks). I have never felt so powerless over my skin, nor erabarrassed. Perhaps this spiro experiment was a terrible idea--- but I really had no other options. I want to stick with it. But I wish this melasma would go away--it is making me want to hide even more than the acne! man i must have the worst genes ever. . .

Haven't heard of Bactrim - cream or oral? I have been on all sorts of stuff in the last year. Very anxious to see if this works.

look into the blue/red light acne therapy. the lights are called omnilux. it helped me a lot. i, like you, had taken accutane. it worked but after 6 years i was a zit face again and tried to take accutane again and found i couldn't tolerate. i tried the lights. you have to keep up with it but it clears up your skin like nothing else could.

it never made me sick to my stomach -
I alternate between 150 and 125.
have been on for almost 6 months, trying to slowly lower my dose to 100, but break out a little when I go to 125 so I am taking 150 like twice a week and/or around my period.

Hi there goosepimples and sidraz7 - here is my weekly report 2 months in.
I AM CLEAR !!! I am not saying there is not the occational little pimple, but we all can deal with that. The acne on my face is coming out in little dry plugs when I push on them. Glycolic acid for 1/2 hour at night really helps get the last of it out and calm the skin. The Oil is almost gone, I actually need a moisturizer now. I attribute this to starting oral antibiotic doxycycline about 2 weeks ago and drinking just water and unsweetened green tea and a sparing diet. Also I am cheating and taking 150mg, the 100 from my new script and 50 from the old one, and I am still using my acne regimine. I have heard people say you can lower the dose once the acne is under control. Getting ready for my visit from aunt flo, we will see . . .

Goosepimples, I should warn you, I took minocycline for years along with bcp.
When I would get a bruise it wouldn't go completly away, dark circles under the eyes and hyperpigmintation on my face especially if I went in the sun. My pcp had me on the mino, I went to a derm and showed her the old bruises I had. She said it was the mino, there are studies that prove it and put me on doxy. I think it's long term use though that causes that, so if you are just going to take for a while until you get through the rough patch, maybe that won't happen.

good luck to both and keep posting :)

Wow, Spiro seems to have worked really well for a lot of people! I took it about 6 months ago and it did nothing for me, except give me nose bleeRAB every single day. Everytime I washed my face or showered, my nose bled. So obviously, I got off spiro :jester:. Anybody else go through side affects like that??

Well I'm glad that it worked for many of you! Congrats

karm, why do you want to lower your dose and why to you fluctuate from 150 to 125? thanks

my period didn't get irregular until the third month. I broke out from going off the bcp, so I am not going back on. Doesn't matter to me if my perioRAB are the same every month, I would be happy if I never had one again!
Good luck all

karm0099- thanks for your reply post a while ago! i have been so busy with school and finals that i haven't been able to get online for a while. GOOD NEWS- i think the spiro is finally starting to work! things are looking clear and the three week initial breakout has finally disappeared. I am feeling good about my acne finally-- my skin is not perfect but the occassional pimple are coming one at a time and are only on the surface, and usually disappear within a day or two. yay.
thanks for your advice about the melasma. that is my big worry now. the derm told me that there is a cream called tri-luma for it but she won't give it to me til the summer's over. i dont want to stop taking the bcp but have definitely lessened the minocycline...i take one about twice a week now and am hoping to ween myself off it over the next month. I have also been putting spf85 on my upper lip and above my eyebrows (where the darkness is worst).
I am SO happy to hear you are doing better as well. i start a new job this coming monday so i am keeping my fingers crossed the stress doesn't break me out again.....that will be a real test for the spiro.
will try and write more regularly now that school is done. keep me posted as well! this is 2 months and 2 weeks of spiro for me.

Thank you for replying to my post, I really hope it works for the both of us too!:) keep me posted on your progress as well.

update for all you spiro users -
I am 3 full months in and my skin never looked better. I'm hoping the adjustment period to this drug is over and I'm on my way to no more breakouts. I've heard give it 3 - 4 months to see full results, my dr. says it works well for other women that he has on it for acne, but will need to stay on it until past menopause for clear skin. I am thrilled, it's so easy to get ready for work w/o having to cover up broken out skin. I can go w/o makeup and don't feel self-conscious. Good luck to all and just wait for it - clear skin is coming.

goosepimples, I am so glad to hear you are finally clearing up! Isn't it exciting? People just don't understand what acne does to your life. I have been off the minocycline for 7 months now and the melasma is almost all gone. I am still taking doxycycline about 5 xs a week, and still getting a few pimples here and there, but it's so minor I can't complain. I need to change my skincare though, skin and hair getting dry. I have hypothyroidism too, so that causes dry skin/hair too. I saw a friend over the weekend, and thru casual conversation found out that she has been on spiro for 9 years. Her skin is just beautiful, she is a fair redhead. She said spiro is the most wonderful drug for women that have hormone irabalances due to one thing or another. She just loves this stuff and takes only 50/day. Why drs are not using it more I have no clue. good continued luck! You might have a few more breakouts, but nowhere near as severe as the medicine continues to clear your skin. Just watch your potassium intake. Take Care.
