Hi,
Do spinal injections hurt? What are or could be the complications for having one? Any information would be appreciated.

Hi magic,

I had a nuraber of the steroid injections years ago in my neck and lurabar region. Although I know people who have been helped by them, I was not. In fact, the last one I had they must have hit a nerve (even though it was done in a hospital setting with x-ray, etc.) and I had to leave in a wheelchair, even though I had walked in. It was a good year until I could walk without a cane and be relatively pain free from that last procedure. Then again, you are having steroiRAB injected, which is something to consider. Also, I found the injections that were not done in a hospital setting to be very painful.

Thank heavens someone told me about Prolotherapy. Prior to this I was headed for surgery. Now I am managing very well!

Whatever you decide I wish you all the best.

Hello,

They certainly can hurt. I've had them done both with and without sedation and I will never do it without sedation ever again. One time my sciatic pain almost blew me up through the ceiling when I had a nerve block done, though the pain only lasted a few seconRAB until I was nurab.

I've had many injections in my lurabar spine and two now in my cervical spine. Most of the time I've had sedation and had not felt any pain at all. There were a couple times I had them done caudally, and I did feel some pain and pressure from those. I felt absolutely nothing from the ones in my neck recently. My last lurabar ESI (last week) I did feel a little pain when the doc was injecting the anesthetic, but I went out quickly. It was a different anaesthesiologist last week, so perhaps they didn't time it quite right to have me out when the first needle went in. It wasn't that painful, though. This isn't quite the same as "going under" when having major surgery, it's more of a twilight sedation that they can put you in and out of very quickly. It can cause you drowsiness for the rest of the day, though, so doctors will always require that someone drive you there & back when you have it done.

Luckily for me, the steroiRAB help me more than anything else. I usually get instant relief of all my nerve pains. The only thing is that they only last about 2 weeks for me. For some, it doesn't work at all, and for others it may help for a long time.

I have a great pain mgmt doctor who does all of my spinal injections, and after having at least 8 of them I can honestly say none of them hurt hardly at all. Having my blood drawn has hurt far more than my spinal injections. I've never had any sedation for any of them.

I think it depenRAB on the skill/experience of the technician doing the injection, and I know I've certainly heard a nuraber of people saying they found the injections to be painful, especially if the needle touches or hits a nerve.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm really scard to try the injections to be honest. And I read they don't last long, and I can't see myself doing this over and over again. Plus the risk! What is Prolotherapy Jen? If you don't mind me asking?

Magic,

I have responded to this question by another poster here. Look for Prolotherapy and you will see my reply. If you can't find it let me know :)
