Hi out there, i just had spinal fusion of l3 l4 l5. it has been 2 weeks tomorrow is it normal to only be able to walk for a few minutes and have to lay down again all day long. from marlene

from what I understand....you should have been required to walk a specific distance a number of times while in the hospital....were you able to do that?

Did the hospital set you up with an outline of what to expect? I do understand that consistent bedrest isn't a good thing.

What pain meds did they set you up with? Do you have a walker?

I think it's best to call the surgeon and tell him you aren't able to do whatever and can you come in to see him so he can evaluate you.

But 2 weeks isn't a long time....what exactly is it that you should be doing at home while recovering?

You sound like you are on track. What you do need to do is to get up and walk several times a day-go a little farther each time you get up, even if it is only one or two steps more. You should also be sitting up for a period of time each day. Not long each time, just 10-15 minutes. You do need to keep up with the walking as it increases the blood flow to your back and that will help with the healing.

Come check out the back board here. It has alot of good hints for after your surgery.

I started with the same 3 level fusion. Does your doctor have you in a brace?
