Well, hi everybody. I have not been aroun for quite some time as I had been doing real well post surgery. I have had 3 spinal fusions, one surgery to remove knodts rod eons ago. A little background....I had L3-4 (w/instrumentation) fused 7 months ago, prior to that had L4-5, 14 months ago, L5-S1 21 years ago.

Okay, I went to the ER thinking I had appendicitis, they did a CT scan with gastrograffin. Which lit up my insides like a Christmas tree. I did not have appendicitis, scar tissue was blamed for my pain, since I had had hernia surgery awhile back. Okay, what the CT scan did show was a 6cm X 2cm area of ?? what? I do not know. Spinal fluid? It is in the L3-L5 area, I think, actually my spine hurts more towarRAB L1-T12. I thought that my pain was caused by me going back to work, sitting in an office all day, not having my chair adjusted properly, etc.

At any rate, I called my surgeon's office to schedule an appointment and was told because I owe them $350.00 my account is on hold, they would not be able to schedule an appointment until this amount was paid. I was furious. I emailed my Dr. and his P.A. and explained my husband was on unemployment, I was just released from a temporary job. And, I had no money for them at this time, but would pay them when I received my tax refund.

The P.A. called and advised me to get an MRI at another hospital and he would look at the report and follow up with me. Weeks went by, I am in pain, a great deal of pain. I am taking Percodan 7.5/325 every 6 hours for pain.

I received a phone call from the P.A. while on the way to see my immunologist, the P.A. states he wants me to have a CBC, ESR (sed rate = measure of infection) and a C-reative protein test. The P.A. told me it is one of three things, 1. spinal fluid, 2. fluid build up to take up space of bone that was removed when I had my fusion surgery, or 3. an abcess.

Since I have an immune deficiency called CVID common variable immune deficiency and I receive gamma globulin on a weekly basis, these test results will be skewed. My immunologist wants me to have a gallium scan to see if this is an abcess. I think this is an excellent idea.

Has anyone been through anything like this? Because of my immune issues, I am always tired, rundown, fighting off infections, etc.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I know it has been along drawn out post.

Hosta, long time no hear from! I am sorry about all the stuff you have been thry. I am not familiar with the procedure that you are under going but I will pray that you find strength and an answer. Take Care, Dee

Yup Hosta we had the same doctor in Lafayette. What happened I haven't heard from u since you saw the doctor in Indy.

Hosta,
I have childhood reumtoid arthrities and a lot of other symptoms of auto-immune disease. Fight with it all my life. Causes me as well so many health issues during my 51 yeas.

After my second surgery 7 weeks ago, visiting nurse got scared when she saw a big hard lump on a surgical area. It was hot to touch, pretty big in size. Since surgery I had for a good 5 weeks low grade fevers.

She called NP at HSS in NYC (place i got my last surgery) and they immideately sent me to have same blood work done.
My C-reactive was very high, but white blood cells were normal.
She said that if both of them would be elevated, than I would have immediately come to the office since this could be an infection. What made them worry is the fever mostly, this is the first indicator of infections.

I developed post-surgery bacterial pnemonia one hour after surgery and this fever obviously was due to this condition.

They decided that fluid developed in that area and recommended ice: 20 min on - 20 min off, as long as that area is swollen.
It took me 3 days and it got much better. Once in a while i still feel it gets swollen there but not as much.
It was a scare for me too, I believe you. Hope you will be OK.

I so appreciate both of your prayers, and I am praying for guidance as to what I should do, which Dr. to see, etc.

Dee, if memory serves me correctly, didn't you see a spine surgeon in Lafayette? He is not the one involved in this problem.

I am angry, I thought that my days of pain were over. I have done so much since having surgery. I was back to my old self, painting our master bedroom, refinishing some furniture, doing the things I loved. I was not in pain! I could tell when I over did it, you know that little ache that says you did too much today.

Okay, I am feeling sorry for myself. LOL I refuse to be a victim!

The reason it took the P.A. so long to get back with me? LOL They were waiting on the actual films from the CT scan and the MRI. Good Grief, I have them in my purse, a flimsy excuse. I guess they have not heard of email.

Hosta, I also remeraber you...so sorry that you are having more problems, let us hope and pray that it will be something simple...we can only hope. Drs. offices can be such a pain sometimes...I've learned not to wait too long to call them back...if I am waiting for them to call me...I give them a reasonable amount of time...then I call them again..if I haven't heard from them. My file had been left on the Drs. desk at one point for 2 months...and I was waiting for a call back..which didn't happen.
I hope you have some answers soon.
