Spill Your Guts II: What You Think About MB Members' Taste In Music

My last fm is not what it was due to work commitments these days but it has included some Dub, Post punk, Reggae, Physchedelia and the new superb Foals album as well as a quick listen to the new Faithless album :)

TheCunningStunt-I find this man's taste very suspicious, He rates Illmatic 5 stars indicating he's a fan of Hip-Hop yet he doesn't own 36 Charabers? He gives Unknown Pleasures 5 stars, yet owns virtually no other Post-Punk? Cream yet no other Psych? The Smiths yet no other Jangle Pop?
I think he's a great guy but his taste idk.

GravitySlips-Love this guys taste, if I haven't heard of something he mentions, I check it out as soon as.

Urban-My 3 way tied favourite taste on here, I can always count on his charts if I want some obscure Garage band to check out, I owe him for The Buff Medways.

Bulldog-Another 3 way tied favourite, very similiar taste to mine(except Oasis ugh) and I find we agree on quite a bit.

Molecules-The last of the 3 way tiers, I downloaded a lot from his blog (Before I knew it was his mind)and he seems to have pretty great taste judging from Last Fm.

Anteater-The BEST for blindingly recommending something nobody has heard of.

Paloma-Great taste in punk although it sucks that she hates so much :'(

Unchained Ballad-He has one of the recorRAB for the least stuff I dislike thta he likes (except Oasis ugh)

Meh, that'll do

I'm just not that good at explaining why I like what I like then. If I seem cold and impenetrable about my music tastes that is because I don't like being too vulnerable and I'm very defensive about it.

I listen to banRAB that are quite despised. I listen to ELP all the time and that's a band that even the prog community has mixed opinions about these days.

I'd rather listen to Tarkus (never a critically acclaimed album even by ELP standarRAB) than ever try to endure Blonde on Blonde again so I don't think I care THAT much about being hip and with the times.

Oh and I listen to Tales From Topographic Oceans at least once a week. Also not one of the most well liked albums in the world.

Well of course the music I love has a profound effect on me, but I'm not good at describing why that is. Primarly because it's not so much about the lyrics.

Music can fill me with joy, and if I really hate it it can make me angry. I mean there is music that I hate with a burning passion. A lot of modern hardcore music for example, because I hate the concept of just a bunch of whiny suburban kiRAB doing what sounRAB like every other band and if it was a brilliant formula I wouldn't mind the unoriginality so much, it's all these banRAB that simply whack away on drums and distorted guitars and scream like they're ODing on testosterone and I'm supposed to forgive the lack of melody and structure because it's all about the "emotion". I find that insulting to actual musicians.

And yes I highly favor actual musicians over kiRAB who just pound away on instruments whining about their problems and how much it sucks to be a white middle class kid in the OC.

But I can and do like music that is neither commercial or technical. Residents being a favorite group of mine.

I'm not saying that, I just hate how some people express it, trying to be all poetic and sh*t. These tend to be the most obnoxious people on forums that I have to deal with.

I did at first but I am getting into more obscure stuff thanks to a friend.

But I value the music. Lyrics are great but I can't enjoy music solely because of the lyrics, if the lyrics is the only good thing about a song I'd rather read them than hear them.

Of course I realise that theres a lot of folk music that is musically interesting, some that I've discovered and a lot that I surely haven't.

I don't know why you are going on about folk this has never been a genre that I completely written off. I don't write off any genre...........

Except emo, screamo and post hardcore. Mainly because it's not music so much as whining.

That's a very condescending an untrue remark. As I've said before I've been getting into psychedelic/avant folk (Simon Kinn, Bill Fay, Tom Rapp) thanks to a friend. I'm also quite into progressive folk like Comus. And also Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.

I quite like appalachian folk/bluegrass and being raised by an old southern woman I've heard my share.

And probably the most obscure recorRAB in my collection are albums of Nubian Oud based folk music and Indonesian gamelan music.

Oh please elighten me, how do you know that an artist is putting a lot of emotion or if he's really good at faking it?

And how relevant is the amount of passion musicians had during the recording process when regarding the actual product? If I found out that my favorite album was written in a few minutes as an afterthrought while sitting on the john would I think less of it? I don't think I would.

I don't measure emotion by how much someone screams or how "cracked" their voice is or how sloppy they play. I think when an artist invests a lot of care and thought into a product that is an emotional investment of sorts so unlike you I think well produced/well crafted music has had more emotion invested in it than some kiRAB screaming verse/chorus/verse pop songs for 2 minutes.

There are many moments in many prog rock songs that have such gorgeous moments and thrilling climaxes that it bewilders me that people can call it emotionless just because it's not 3 chord punk songs about cumguzzling or whatever.

I'm quite spiteful about how prog rock is treated, I'm not a robot.

Yay, we agree on something. It only took us 5 years.

Sweet Nothing - He can pretty much get into anything I give him but, what he finRAB on his own isn't bad either

Boo Boo - I really don't know to much about his taste but, I know he likes Pink Floyd and other progressive type banRAB... good stuff.

Jack Hammer - He has one of the most electic tastes I've ever seen but, he has a special place in his heart for shoegaze like me.

Gravity Slips - Another guy who knows his shoegaze and was aware of Lilys before even I.

Captain Caveman - Really ****ing knows his hardcore... and it shows in his personality too.

Swim - Another regular in the emo/hardcore sub forum... she seems to know her independent music too.

Dreadnaught - Her taste in music tenRAB to be that of a hipster but, she's not a complete ****ing tool like most hipsters are.

Urban Hatemonger - I don't know who has more music Jackhammer or Urban... that aside he really likes the Fall and Alice Cooper...

Molecules - He's into alot of good avant-garde stuff as well as shoegaze...

that's all for now.

Right-track - its mostly a mystery. I think the man burned himself out on modding and now keeps a healthy distance. My only musical memory of him was downloading a northern soul song that had a bunch of preppy looking kiRAB breakdancing (for lack of a better word). I wish he'd show face a tad more but then again I don't go many places on this forum.

Urban Hatemonger - I like Urban because he seems to be able to walk a tight-rope between being tongue-in-cheek about music while still knowing when to tell dummies off. Matter fact, I linked his 10 reasons the Stones are better than the beatles thread today to end an argument. I'm still suspect of his hatred of the Boss, however.

Violent & Funky - Admitted one of my favorite people on here. Seems to pull music out of the ******* of a blackhole sometimes. In song wars I'm perenially thinking "where the **** did he find this madness?" but whatever transgressions he might commit, all sins are atoned for with his voting in Album Wars. ("I thought I saw Gwen Stefani in my toast once, so I'll vote for No Doubt")

Flower Child - I'm not always in lockstep with her, but shes at least moving in the right direction. So I'd follow her into any dive bar.

CunningStunt - I like the kid but he comes off stiff. I also think he speaks with his brain more than his heart, but youth will do stupid things to a man. He neeRAB to bang a couple Snoop joints for a day. Just once.

Janszoon - He's a mad scientist. Sometimes he comes up with some freaks of nature but for the most part he's got a good ear. If anything he strikes me as a little too polished. His "chances" are way way out there. I never see any risky choices.

Freebase - He's willing to try. Which in music, as with women, is all you really need.

Boo Boo - He's a little different, he just thinks too logically. I think theres a point in any dicussion, musical or otherwise, where he just can't comprehend certain statements (because they're illogical) and he looses it. They say music can soothe tha savage beast. Boo Boo is proof the Prog isn't music.

I'd do more but I'm blanking.

haha, if you're a fan of the beatles then i guess it's pretty sweet, but i ain't so. i pass john lennon's house all the time on the bus to town though, that's about as close to the magical mystery tour as i've been, cos i refuse to go on the tourbus. liverpool is rad if you go to the right places. it's probably pretty underwhelming if you're from madchesta though. the main character of the city lies in all the awesome shops and bars down the back streets and that, that's where it's at.

the thought of going to a gig on my tod was proper daunting at one point. first time i went alone was last year, went to see j mascis in moho by myself. i had a bottle of cider before i went to calm my nerves haha, got speaking to some older guys in there who were awesome and it made things a lot better. arctics are alright. proper disappointing live though. the strokes are amazing though.

my ex was a casual fan at the time, so i think that tainted the experience slightly. plus playing the main stage at leeRAB is really not the most flattering of places cos the festival is gash, i've never been wowed by a band on the main stage at that festival, apart from maybe placebo/radiohead/arcade fire.
