Speedy Gonzales movie is coming

I highly doubt Sylvester will be in this film. Lopez and his wife have basically stated up front that they're going to stay as far away from the source material as possible.

So basically, this is a movie based on the classic Looney Tunes cartoons that deliberately does everything it can to be nothing like those cartoons, all for the sake of political correctness. Thank you for saving me yet another ten dollars, Hollywood.
 
He was, and the character by himself can be seen as completely non offensive, thus a number of Mexicans and Mexican Americans having lots of love for Speedy.
The thing about Speedy isn't exactly that he's a negative stereotype, he's the exact opposite, and that's ironically still racist. See, the joke behind his character is the fact that he's very fast and energetic, which is the opposite of the slow, lazy Mexican he's "supposed" to be (see: Slowpoke). It's just like a black man in a tux in the 1920's: it's funny because it's the opposite of (supposed) reality.

However, most people today don't see that joke, they just see Speedy himself. Without the racist connotations of the joke that originally bore him, there's actually nothing wrong with Speedy at all. We don't look at him as the ironic opposite of a sleepy Mexican anymore, he's just a very fast mouse with an accent.
 
Or in other words WB didn't learn one lesson from that disaster wannabe future Superhero show Loonatics(Thats its name right I cant even remember it anymore)

Also Geogre Lopez ugh well it be be worse they could have gotten Carlos Mencia to do it.
 
You know, not to sound jerky, but I've never understood when people say this. True, this movie doesn't sound like much and it is jarring that it's allegedly about Speedy Gonzalez though they're making it as unlike the character and his mythos as possible, but how can this or any other bad movie based on a familiar cartoon from the past ruin one's childhood? Your childhood can't be ruined because you've already lived through it; one bad Hollywood adaptation isn't going to change or alter anything that happened to you as a kid. Just ignore the movie, let it come and run its' course. Your childhood is safe.

-Of course, in my case it helps that I was never a fan of Speedy Gonzalez to being with...
 
You may have a point; if this is the best Warner Bros. can do when it comes to new projects with these characters, it might be best to just leave the characters alone. Rebroadcasting the classic cartoons is the best way to keep them alive, not this live action/CGI garbage.
 
Mythos? REALLY? Using the word 'Mythos' when speaking about Speedy Gonzales feels like hyperbole to me.

Speedy is a fast mexican mouse with a shrill voice. People try to stop him. They fail and get hurt. The kids laugh and that's the end of it.

That's not much of a 'mythos' if you ask me. Not much to work with either beside old physical comedy.

I don't see how they could do it without changing anything since there's not enough of a structure to Speedy to make more than a 5 minutes cartoon to begin with.

Though I gotta say they could do better than make him the misfit -.- I mean he's pratically The Flash with whiskers!
 
Movies like this kind of cater to a new audience. The Garfield movie got attention but it was mostly by young children. These G-rated films tend to do well because the parents kind of remember the name of the characters but not enough about their personalities to measure if they were the same or better than the original cartoons. What's sad is that George Lopez is taking this role.
 
That's a very good point. It never ceases to amaze me how the people who claim that Speedy is a 'racist' stereotype overlook the fact that alot of mexican people actually like Speedy. George Lopez should've known better.
 
I'm pretty sure the racist stereotype that Speedy represents is that he's really fast, and therefore do anything undetected.

Kinda like the people who cross the border illegally.

Just my opinion, though, but that's how I learned it.
 
Never cared much for Speedy (didnt like pepe le pew either but at least those had excellent backgrounds of paris) but this is still a bad idea. Heck, is speedy even that well known? Even people who dont watch cartoons know bugs, daffy, sylvester, road runner, etc, while speedy, coming later in the studio's run, is relatively obscure (not on the level of cool cat or merlin the magic mouse but still,,).
 
BAAARRRRFFFF!!!! And I thought Space Jam was bad for ruining the character's personalities... this just takes it to a whole new level. At least Space Jam didn't try to tell us the character's life stories :rolleyes:

What's next, we get to see Daffy Duck's politically correct childhood? Blech blech blech. There is NO POINT to giving these characters back stories. It's like BAD FAN FICTION!! (is there even GOOD fan fiction? Not that I've ever read :shrug:)
I don't need to know how Daffy Duck got his lisp, why Porky wears no pants, why Bugs Bunny got addicted to carrots, or why Speedy freakin' Gonzales is so fast. Seriously. Sheesh. If it ain't broke DON'T FIX IT!
 
Exactly. These characters don't really need a 'back story'. They're already established. Although Bugs has been know to tell his 'back story' in cartoons like 'A Hare Grows In Manhattan', and 'What's Up Doc', but that's about it.
