Speedy Gonzales movie is coming

Wasn't Speedy taken off TV for reputedly being a negative stereotype of Mexicans? :shrug: Oh well, I guess they need more cartoon rodents to turn into Alvin & The Chipmunks-style CGI franchises... :sad:
 
If an entirely hand drawn cartoon is what they were gonna do then I might've become interested, but if they're gonna turn Speedy into a CGI abomination like Scooby Doo and Garfield, then I'll pass.

George Lopez will lend his voice to Speedy Gonzales in the new mixed live-action and CG animated feature film based on the Looney Tunes character from New Line and Warner Bros, per Heat Vision. The Speedy movie will be written by Alec Sokolow and Joel Choen, who also co-penned Toy Story and two Garfield movies among others. Lopez with Anne Lopez and Lynette Ramirez will produce the movie for George Lopez Presents, along with Jerry Weintraub, Tracy Ryerson and Jill Arthur. According to the report the movie will be set in the present and the character/brand will also be updated to move Speedy away from long held criticisms that he embodies ethnic/racial stereotypes.

Oy, this could get very painful. While I know their trying and have the best intentions...But why the CGI man... and working with the Garfield people is not a good sign either. I'm just hoping the plot will say it.... maybe.
 
When will Hollywood learn? I mean Marmaduke? Speedy Gonzales? The only good CGI live action movie was Alvin and the Chipmunks and probably Alice in Wonderland. I mean what next a 101 Dalmatians: The Series live action/ CGI movie? I shudder at the thought of Cadpig being CGI'D.
 
How do we go from Cartoon Network going out of their way not to show Speedy cartoons to him getting his own feature film?

How is Speedy a negative stereotype?

Wasn`t he the protagonist and the hero of all his cartoons?

IMO, as a kid I always preferred Speedy over Jerry Mouse and Tweety Bird, because his antics(as well as those of Road Runner),are always based on karmic revenge for the person chasing him, and not being vicious.
 
This baffles me as well. In fact, I've heard about Mexican people actually complaining because Speedy cartoons were taken off the air. :shrug:
 
I think the more offensive characters were the other mouse like Slowmo Rodrigez or whatever his cousin was called.

Speedy himself had a stereotypical costume but was mostly a jovial figure with not many negative trait.

He wasn't all that funny either if you ask me :yawn:
 
LOL! I posted the same subject in Retro [ex-Boomerang]. I wonder, though if the greatest villian of all, Daffy Duck will be the enemy as he was in the mid and late 1960s.:p
 
The only time Speedy could be considered offensive was in his first appearance with the gold tooth and such. Even that didn't really offend me all that much because I understand it was a different time. As for what they're going to do with the character I really can't jump to conclusions until I see more.
