well friday morning i got my warning for speeding from our local police officer. Come to find out my bike is reading 7 miles faster than what his radar gun says.I have a 05 c90. is there anything i can do about it. I just got the bike used. Thanks for any and all help.:ooops:

Probably not.
They are off in that direction partly to PREVENT you from going faster than you think.
So........speedo off by 7, officer gives you 5, that means you have a 12 mph cushion......if you actually watch the speedo. What's the problem?

Don't you mean your speedo is reading 7mph SLOWER than his radar gun. This means that your speedo says you are doing let's say 50mph when you are actually doing 57mph by his radar gun. So you think you are a law abiding citizen and he says you're a speeding criminal. He he.

Generally with stock "stones" your speedo is off by about 5 mph. So at 55 you are doing 50. I was told this but proved it by having my wife do 55 on the hwy and my speedo read close to 61. I still have my stock "stones" on. Different size tires will effect speedo, odometer and mileage calculations. So I suppose if you had a larger tire than the stock "stones" then you would be equal or greater than your speedo, smaller just the opposite.

they are the stock stones. so the way it sounds i just will have to live with it. I guess reading fast is better than reading slow:D

It would be nice it the manuf. actually calibrated the speedo for stock tires.

This is competely normal for a motorcycle speedo. If you want accurate, you will have to send the speedo off to a professional speedometer shop- probably not worth the money.

So approximately how much does it cost to have your speedometer calibrated to read the correct speed? Is it the cost that isn't worth it or just the hassle? I never gave it much thought as I don't really speed (everyone seems to be speeding by me at least). This has now struck my curiosity.

Great idea CaptJaneWay. It would be just like that movie "The Rookie" where the guy throws fastballs at the radar sign.

Or you can purchase a fairly cheap Radar gun, found in those big stores, for checking to see how fast your future little league champion is throwing.

Hey that's a good idea about the GPS unit. I keep waiting for one of the portable radar devices to be on the side of the road to try it out. Usually every time I see one there's always some dude screaming up behind me messing up the reading. Then when I go back at night they turn it off. D'oh! One day... one day.

Good to know that my bike isn't the only one that has the speedo read different. When I ride 55 (according to my husband's speedo) I show that I'm going 60...5 miles difference. When I took my bike in after the break-in period, I questioned the difference. They really didn't give me an answer. Kind of got miffed because they treadted me as "She's just some broad who won't know what we are talking about anyway." Not a good impression and I haven't been back there since. I change my own oil and haven't had any maintenance issues as of yet. I do need a new back tire...any suggestions?

I hooked up a Garmin Nuvi 660 on a RAM mount to the bike. It confirms what you already know about the speedometer. Nice to have the GPS, but I find it more distracting than in the car. I'll probably only use it on longer trips.
